Build upon the practice you developed in EDSS223 and enhance your knowledge on the teaching of Humanities and Social Sciences curriculum at primary school levels.

In this unit you will develop content knowledge and pedagogy to teach Humanities and Social Sciences with emphasis placed on Geography and Citizenship Education. You will examine the current NSW and ACARA (Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority) curriculum documents. This unit includes elements of citizenship education and explicit values teaching. You will learn how to design learning experiences and assessment strategies linked to required curriculum policies.

You will develop the literacy, numeracy, and digital literacy skills relevant to teaching Geography in the primary years and develop an awareness of the responsible uses of resources in the primary school classroom. You will also explore the importance of fieldwork for teaching students of Geography.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. apply broad knowledge and skills to demonstrate an understanding of the relevance to current NSW state syllabus and ACARA (Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority) curriculum documents of values education strategies, to citizenship education, Aboriginal history, global education and education for sustainability (GTSD 2.1.1, 2.4.1);
  2. demonstrate coherent understanding of pedagogy and disciplines that contribute to the current NSW state syllabus and ACARA curriculum documents in order to meet outcomes (GTSD 2.1.1);
  3. design learning experiences, teaching and assessment strategies for authentic and integrated learning in the humanities and social science learning areas that are consistent with current NSW state syllabus and ACARA curriculum documents (GTSD 1.5.1. 2.2.1, 3.2.1, 3.3.1, 5.1.1);
  4. employ the literacy, numeracy and digital literacy skills relevant to learning in the humanities learning areas including those mediated through ICT technologies (GTSD 2.5.1, 2.6.1); and
  5. locate, evaluate and use a variety of appropriate teaching resources and educational providers that support the teaching of humanities and social sciences in the primary years and develop an awareness of the safe, responsible and ethical use of such resources (GTSD 3.4.1, 7.2.1, 7.4.1).
