Unit information
The unit is designed to provide comprehensive insights into key institutional and substantive aspects of human rights protection in Europe.
Firstly, you will explore human rights in the European Community-European Union, namely the sources of human rights and enforcement procedures.
Secondly, you will focus on human rights protection provided by the Council of Europe, particularly the European Convention on Human Rights and the case law of the European Court of Human Rights.
You will also examine substantive and procedural issues raised by the accession of the European Union to the European Convention on Human Rights.
This unit challenges you to apply your critical thinking, analysis, judgement and communication skills to understand the effectiveness of human rights protection in Europe.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate a coherent understanding of the nature and scope of the human rights protection system in Europe, its structure and relationship to the international legal context;
- use initiative and judgement to critically analyse, synthesise, and evaluate the effectiveness of human rights protection in Europe;
- demonstrate an ability to undertake research by accessing both domestic and international sources, employing the skills of legal research techniques, reasoning and argument, and applying theoretical concepts to develop independent opinions on legal issues relevant to the protection of human rights in Europe; and
- act independently to present a clear and coherent exposition of the relevant knowledge that evidences legal research, legal reasoning and professional judgment in answering questions that relate to issues of human rights protection in Europe.
