Unit information
Undertaking an honours year gives you a real sense of what life as an academic is like. It can be a bridge between undergraduate and postgraduate studies, and gives a clear signal to future employers that your research, critical thinking, and communication skills are at an advanced level.
Guided by our experienced academic staff, you will choose a research topic that is relevant to your strengths and interests. Your honours involves preparation of a thesis, which forms a major part of the program, as well as four coursework units completed/chosen in consultation with your supervisor(s).
In order to facilitate scheduling, we ask that you approach a potential supervisor in the Computer Science discipline to arrange a project of interest. UNE's Computer Science honours provides you with opportunities to hone specialised discipline knowledge, fostering your development as a skilled research professional.

Candidates should download the COSC493 Thesis Proposal Form which must be completed and submitted to the School for approval. Candidates must consult their supervisor before enrolling in this and the elective units.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge of research principles and methods by critically analysing a challenging complex or multi-faceted problem, identifying research questions, selecting practical and/or theoretical techniques or tools to address those research question, and designing and planning a project;
- apply advanced problem-solving, design and decision-making methodologies to conduct a research project, including analysing, interpreting and critically evaluating research findings;
- communicate complex research findings and concepts effectively to specialist and non-specialist audiences through written, oral and visual modes, and coordinate research activities effectively;
- manage own time and processes effectively by prioritising competing demands to complete a research project with a high degree of autonomy; and
- demonstrate advanced knowledge and skills in computer science, mathematics, and discipline fundamentals.
