Unit information
In many scientific settings, our understanding of complex observations or experimental results is shaped by applying methods of statistical inference. Inference can be used to help us make conclusions about an underlying population based on a sample data.
Adding to your statistical skill set, this unit will help you to develop an in-depth understanding of the fundamental strategies and underlying theoretical concepts that are critical for statistical inference. You will explore various methods of estimation and properties of the estimators, hypothesis testing, analysis of variance, linear regression and an introduction to Bayesian inference.
With a focus on integrating your critical thinking and analytical skills with theoretical statistics knowledge, you will be equipped for flexible, creative statistical thinking that will allow you to find solutions to diverse problems in practice.

Two lectures and a two-hour tutorial/workshop per week for on-campus students; online students must have access to the statistical package R

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- use advanced theoretical knowledge of probability and statistics to appreciate the different types of statistical inference (i) frequentist (ii) Bayesian and (iii) non-parametric;
- with expert cognitive and technical skills, and theoretical knowledge, analyse data using (i),(ii) and (iii), using statistical computing;
- generate and interpret solutions to complex statistical problems by applying methodology in a logical and coherent fashion;
- demonstrate autonomy, expert judgement, and synthesis of complex information to report statistical results to others; and
- combine their established knowledge of probability and statistics with research to independently analyse data within a special topic, reflecting critically on and communicating the results of this analysis.
