Unit information
Designed for school-based support/wellbeing staff, community and social workers, this unit will help you to develop evidence-based strategies for responding to wellbeing, behavioural and engagement difficulties.
Throughout the unit, you will learn how to empower students to develop resilience, take initiative, build and maintain relationships, and increase emotional awareness, management and optimism.
Upon completion, you’ll be able to demonstrate integrated knowledge and understanding of a range of disabilities and support needs in a school setting, particularly within the context of policy documents, OH&S and risk management legislation as they relate to students with a history or current presentation of significant behavioural difficulties in the classroom.
This unit supports you to understand and demonstrate strategies for reporting to and working effectively, sensitively and confidentially with parents/carers, community members and external professionals. You will also gain an understanding of the teacher’s role and their communication and reporting responsibilities with parents within the school setting.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- Understand and apply relevant ethical principles, and legislative, administrative and organisational policies and processes required by teachers in the school context.
- Demonstrate, based on relevant theories, concepts and methods, an understanding of how student well-being, mental health, and the different types of supports available to students impact on learning and behaviour.
- Demonstrate coherent knowledge and integrated understanding of a range of disabilities and support needs in a school context.
- Understand and refer to policy documents, OH&S and Risk Management legislation as they relate to students with a history, or current presentation, of significant behavioural difficulties in the classroom.
- Understand and demonstrate strategies for reporting to, and working effectively, sensitively and confidentially with parents/carers, community members and/or external professionals and understand the teacher’s role and reporting relationships with parents in the school context.
- Demonstrate knowledge of practical approaches to manage student wellbeing, safety and challenging behaviours within the classroom.
