Unit information
In recent years, the field of Educational Psychology has introduced a new theoretical term or topic area known as ‘Psychology in the School’. Why do some students avoid school? What makes students enjoy school? Why is peer relationship such an important discourse for development? How do we, as educators, approach and/or promote the topic of death in school? And, how does the concept of esoteric psychology assist students with their coping of daily life experiences?
These reflective questions form the basis of this unit of study. It provides you with the opportunity to study different psychological theories of human agency (e.g., holistic education), situated in school and classroom contexts.
Subjects introduced in this unit may offer theoretical insights and personal understanding for further postgraduate (research) studies. At the same time, the unit will also support in-service teachers and professionals to apply a wide range of practical strategies and techniques for effective functioning in society.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate in-depth understanding of key theoretical tenets of educational psychology theories (e.g., life education) pertaining to life, death, and human agency;
- apply theoretical understandings of educational psychology theories of life, death, and human agency to various educational contexts;
- demonstrate advanced critical thinking and problem-solving skills, including the ability to analyse and critique existing research inquiries pertaining to life, death, and human agency;
- conduct an independent research inquiry (e.g., philosophical inquiry) into a specialized topic within the broad contexts of life, death, and/or human agency;
- demonstrate in-depth understanding of problem-based and research-based learning with a view to propose new teaching and learning inquiries for future investigation; and
- demonstrate a capacity to responsibly self – and peer – assess in team activities.
