Unit information
Security and terrorism investigations draw significant public interest and influence strategic and long-term outcomes beyond local communities, often on a global scale. In this unit, you’ll explore how these high-profile investigations shape global trends, policies and laws, laying a strong foundation for studies in criminology and social sciences.
You’ll examine key principles and strategies for conducting effective investigations, including the use of intelligence-led policing, the importance of proactive enforcement. The risks and challenges of conducting investigations, including the need to balance public safety and individual rights, will also be analysed.
Additionally, you will review the role of technology and innovation in security and terrorism investigations, learning how to identify opportunities to leverage data analytics and AI in the workplace. You will also explore how interagency cooperation and collaboration drives strategic outcomes, developing an understanding of the benefits of enhanced awareness of these interactions.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an advanced ability to apply strategic thinking in security operations, focusing on long term sustainable outcomes and the alignment of security measures with organisational goals;
- demonstrate advanced expertise in conducting comprehensive threat/risk assessments, including the identification, analysis, and prioritisation of security threats related to terrorism;
- demonstrate specialised skills to develop and implement policies and strategies that address terrorism and security challenges, ensuring they are effective, sustainable, and adaptable to emerging threats;
- demonstrate a specialised ability to evaluate the effectiveness of security strategies and terrorism investigations, using evidence-based approaches to continuously improve outcomes and adapt to new challenges; and
- demonstrate a specialised ability to lead and manage crisis situations, particularly those involving potential terrorist threats, ensuring coordinated an effective response to minimise harm and restore security.
