Unit information
Develop your clinical interviewing and professional practice skills, and learn about the core competencies of psychological practice, including cultural competence and self-reflective practice.
The first part of this unit will help you to understand the non-specific factors and key communication and counselling skills required of a beginning clinician.
Developing your competency in clinical interviewing, in the second part of the unit you will learn how to conduct an initial psychological interview, including a risk assessment, utilising key counselling skills.
Finally, you will explore current topics relating to ethical and professional psychological practice, including ethical decision making and self-care.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge and application of key communication and counselling skills;
- understand the requirements of clinical interviewing, and demonstrate competence in the administration of an initial clinical interview including a risk assessment;
- demonstrate self-reflective practice;
- describe the key ethical standards for professional practice, apply ethical problem-solving to resolve ethical dilemmas; and understand the requirements of self care within ethical practice; and
- understand core competencies of professional practice including cultural responsiveness.
