Unit information
Build on your understanding of pharmacotherapeutics, integrating your pharmacological knowledge with an understanding of disease prevention and management. This unit utilises case-based learning to enhance your clinical decision-making skills in complex scenarios.
Studying this unit, you will have opportunities to further develop your knowledge of the hierarchy of evidence in therapeutic decision making.
Focusing on disease states relating to neurologic, psychiatric, reproductive and gastrointestinal therapies, you will apply evidence-based guidelines and contemporary literature to cases to inform clinical decisions.
With exposure to cases of increasing complexity, including, investigations of alterations in pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic parameters commonly seen in geriatrics and paediatrics, you will be equipped for practice in diverse contexts.

Notes
Students must have the following equipment for active participation in virtual classrooms and online assessments (e.g. online invigilated assessments, viva voce and media presentations):
- Headset, including microphone - this is required for active participation in virtual classrooms and to listen to lecture and other media provided in units (a USB style headset has proven to provide superior audio quality to the jack style headset when used for online teaching software).

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- use an appropriate tool to critically appraise a research article;
- apply evidence-based medicine and guidelines to prioritise appropriate treatment options for the individual patient;
- describe the consequences of patient parameters on multiple issues; and
- demonstrate a clinical decision-making process that identifies the most appropriate management.

| Assessment 3 - Assurance Task | Yes | 50% | All offerings | Final Examination. There is a supervised exam at the end of the teaching period in which you are enrolled. The exam will be offered online with supervision via webcam and screen sharing technology. Coordinated by UNE Exams Unit. To pass this unit, you must attempt this task and achieve a cumulative mark of at least 50% across all assessments. |
