Unit information
Music production and recording is crucial to the global music industry. As a musician it is important that you are able to merge scholarly thinking with practical experience of music creation and production.
Studying this unit gives you an in-depth study of the creative, technical and aesthetic principles employed in current music recording and production practices. You will develop expert knowledge and technical skills around current recording studio technologies, and engage in critical listening exercises to develop high level abilities to interpret sound events useful to application in your own creative projects.
You will critically examine a range of artists, engineers and producers to gain a deep understanding of different high-level approaches to recording and production. In this unit you will enhance your independent problem solving skills, enabling you to adapt and to manage individual and group based projects in a professional and reflective manner.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- critically analyse and reflect on aural events including commonly encountered audio effects and digital processing techniques using advanced theoretical and technical knowledge;
- critically analyse, evaluate and synthesise complex information about the role of music production technologies in sound recordings;
- demonstrate in-depth technical knowledge of music recording, editing, mixing and processing for creative music making;
- demonstrate high-level practical skills for music recording, editing, mixing and processing for creative music-making utilising industry standard software and hardware; and
- manage independent and collaborative tasks in a professional manner, demonstrating reflective practice, adaptability and an awareness of current issues and ethical practices pertaining to the field of music production.
