Biography
Dr Rajesh Thapa is a researcher in the field of Geographical information systems (GIS) and remote sensing. Dr Thapa has over 20 years of progressive experience in supporting the delivery of spatial information. Dr Thapa uses best practice science in applying remote sensing and GIS technologies to understand the change in the plant community, floodplain vegetation productivity, land use land cover change monitoring, environmental impact assessment. Dr Thapa's research has contributed to the governmental agencies across the Hindu Kush-Himalayan Region in South Asia and the Danube River basin in Europe, as well as for the projects allocated from NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.
Dr Thapa has recently completed the Greater Sydney Connectivity Modelling using 2m spatial resolution tree canopy data, contributed to the modelling of 78 threatened species modelling for the Saving our Species programme (SoS), Environmental Niche, and landscape capacity modelling both at the landscape level focusing on ecological connectivity and carrying capacity. Dr Thapa involvement with the Biodiversity Indicator Programme (BIP), NSW-wide Relative Persistent Green Cover mapping and productivity mapping further underscores his commitment to environmental research. Since 2019, he has been an integral part of the koala in the Landscape funded by the NSW’s Koala Strategy in mapping koala current habitat and their future climate refugia.
