About the project:
Peter Davies established this scholarship in memory of his wife Maiben who was killed in a motorcycle accident at the entrance to UNE grounds on 19 August 1963. The goal is to attract to the University of New England very able candidates to undertake postgraduate research in Classics
How will the scholarship be paid?
Scholarship will be paid directly into successful candidate's bank account.
The holder of this Scholarship will be asked to repay it if candidature is transferred to another University.
Scholarship Special Conditions:
- The candidate must have an outstanding first degree from any university in Greek Language or Classics and intend to pursue postgraduate research in any area of ancient Greek or joint Classics (Homer to the early Byzantine period), which involves a strong focus on the Greek language and literature.
- The strong focus on the Greek language should be understood to mean that topics in the following areas are acceptable: linguistics, history, philosophy, religion, literature, etc.; whereas art history or archaeology, for example, would be excluded.

Assessment process:
UNE will undertake an initial assessment of applications for eligibility and then the applications will be sent to the School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences for assessment by the Head of School in conjunction with a Professor in Classics and Ancient History.
The award is to be based on academic merit and the quality of the application. The selection panel’s decision is final.
Reporting:
To receive funding each year the student must adhere to all Graduate Research Schools academic milestones to ensure that they continue to meet eligibility requirements. If academic progress is not met the scholarship will be withdrawn and offered to another student.
The successful applicant of the Maiben Davies Postgraduate Scholarship in Classics must acknowledge it explicitly in the thesis and in any other published research or conference papers researched or written during the life of this scholarship.
Acceptance:
In accepting The Maiben Davies Postgraduate Research Scholarship (Classics), the recipient acknowledges that they have read, understand and accept the Terms and Conditions specified above.
Please note that this Terms and Conditions document must be signed and returned IN FULL no later than five (5) days from the date of the offer email. You may contact the Graduate Research School if you need an extension to this deadline.

- Outline of proposed/current PhD/MPhil research project
- Copy of BA or MA coursework thesis and other research, published and unpublished
- The names of two confidential references, with at least one an academic staff member at UNE

Candidates must complete the following HDR Scholarship Application form and submit to the UNE Graduate Research School along with the documentation listed above.
