How to use the AGLC4 SmartCite Assistant
- Enter only one reference check or question at a time for best results.
- Paste your reference or type your question in the message box. This can be full references, partial references, or just publication names.
- Ask questions about AGLC4 formatting rules and guidelines
- Request formatting help for specific types of sources (cases, legislation, books, journal articles, etc.)
Important Tips
- The more information fields you include, the more likely it is that the bot will be able to correctly recognise the source type. Input as much information as possible. For example, if the source is a web page, you should include the URL so the bot can correctly identify the type of source, even though it cannot access the source directly.
- Please note: This bot does not have internet access. It will not be able to identify a source simply by the URL or use a URL to ascertain missing source information. You must provide all relevant information to the bot.
- Once a citation is complete, verify elements that should be italicised, such as case names and titles of legislation.
- Please note that the chat window may remove formatting such as italics and brackets; ensure these are correctly applied in your final document.
- Don't forget to apply a hanging indent to each reference list entry. That is, the first line should be left aligned while subsequent lines are indented.
- If the bot freezes or fails to respond, simply refresh the page.
- If the response provided by the bot seems incorrect or is not quite what you were asking, try rewording the question or providing additional information.
- Only use this bot for AGLC4 referencing assistance.
⚠️ Note
Ensure you evaluate the suggestions carefully and verify any information against the AGLC4 Referencing Guides provided by the Academic Skills Office, the Law Skills Hub, and learning samples in AIRLI.
