TamTalks - Let’s talk about death: bodies and beyond

Published 19 October 2022

Tamworth community is invited to UNE Tamworth’s next Tam Talks event- 'Let’s talk about death: bodies and beyond,’ 12 noon on Thursday 27th October at UNE Tamworth Study Centre.

Presented by UNE’s Ryan Harris and Jon Clay, the event focuses on a topic many of us avoid talking about - death.

The talk will focus on the history and scientific understanding of both anatomy and the paranormal, revealing that these two seemingly disparate topics tread much closer paths than originally thought.

They will consider the question of whether or not modern science provides adequate explanation for paranormal happenings, or are there things out there that we cannot understand as of yet? Or are our brains playing tricks on us during the trick-or-treat season?

Ryan Harris coordinates UNE's body donor program, tutors medical anatomy and administers human anatomy education experiences including embalming, dissection and prosection.

“I am particularly interested in the history of anatomy education and death traditions – from Egyptian mummification and Aztec human sacrifices, to grave robbing and a global human bone trade, to respectful consenting modern scientific practises,” he said

Jon Clay has fifteen years’ experience in biological science and is currently studying bone physiology.  Jon was raised on too much X-Files and a healthy dose of critical thinking.

“This range of skills and beliefs has made me a hopeful sceptic with an interest in the unknown and the insatiable desire to find out more. I have investigated seemingly haunted locations with the focus on the collection of data to understand what the cause of paranormal experiences are, whilst understanding that things aren’t always what they seem!”
