Published 09 December 2021

In 2021, the UNE Business School has continued to maintain a dynamic and active research culture with a strong record of scholarly publications, research grants and postgraduate completions. We actively collaborate with prominent industry partners and leading researchers, both nationally and internationally. Our research is clustered within two thematic areas:

  • Agribusiness and economics
  • Resilient, inclusive and entrepreneurial communities.

The two main thematic areas of research intersect with significant contribution to the dimensions of PIE-GRS (policy, innovation, ethics, gender, responsibility and sustainability).

The significant research that has been undertaken includes:

  • Professor Derek Baker, Director of the UNE Centre for Agribusiness is spearheading new externally funded research projects including:
    • Identification of farmers’ constraints to achieving NSW’s $30 billion agricultural economy by 2030 (Funded by Future Food Systems CRC).
    • Contribution to improvement of the Ethiopian livestock inventory for improved measurement and management of Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Ethiopia (ACIAR-funded project).
    • Development of sample frames for livestock data collection for improved Greenhouse Gas Emissions measurement in Ethiopia (USAID-funded).
    • Low Carbon and the Agro-industrial Supply Chains: Impacts on Australian Farmers (Agri futures-funded).
  • Professor Heather Burrow, Professor Rene Villano, Professor Derek Baker, Dr Isaac Koomson, A/Professor Navjot Bhullar (School of Psychology) and Dr Peter McGilchrist (ERS) are leading ACIAR-funded research projects and new initiatives in South Africa (High Value Beef Partnerships) and Indonesia (Special Bali Beef emanating from IndoBeef project).
  • Professor Rene Villano is part of an ACIAR-funded project conducting Behavioural Economics Experiments in Eastern Gangetic Plains (India, Bangladesh and Nepal). This experiment is the first of its kind in the region involving almost 2000 farmers with the aim of understanding farmer-behaviour decision-making process in the adoption of conservation agriculture technologies.
  • Professor Rene Villano delivered invited special lectures in the University of the Philippines (Mindanao) and Universitas Sumatera Utara (Indonesia). He covered topics in data analytics and methods for conducting business and agricultural research.
  • Professor Rene Villano collaborates and act as a mentor of two ACIAR-funded Alumni Research Support Facility (ARSF) projects in Indonesia and Myanmar and two Merryl Williams Fellows participating in the UNE-operated Gender Equity in Agriculture Research and Development (GEAReD) training program.
  • Emeritus Professor Brian Dollery, Director of the UNE Centre for Local Government, co-edited (with Professor Rhys Andrews, Cardiff University) a Special Edition of Local Government Studies on the Impact of Ageing and Demographic Change on Local Government.
  • A/Professor Sujana Adapa (with colleagues from Griffith University and Meiji University) is progressing a DFAT funded (Australia-Japan Foundation) project titled The Future of Social Science Education Post COVID-19 Pandemic.
  • A/Professor Sujana Adapa, A/Professor Janelle Wilkes, Professor Sue Gregory (School of Education), Dr Ingrid Harrington (School of Education) and A/Professor Jane Clark (School of Health) completed the 2021 HEPPP funded project titled Student Experience Portfolios demonstrating the value of mentoring and coaching.
