Biography

Dr Clemens Koehn studied at universities in Germany (Halle-Wittenberg), Italy (Rome) and England (Oxford). After his PhD in 2005, he taught for many years at the University of the Federal Armed Forces of Germany in Hamburg. In 2014, he joined UNE and since then, has taught all levels of Ancient History and Classics, with a focus on Ancient Greek history and language. His research interests and expertise stretch from Archaic Greece to Late Antiquity. He has published widely on Hellenistic history and historiography (especially Polybius), Roman Republican and Imperial history, military history and the Early Byzantine Empire (especially the reign of emperor Justinian I). For many years, he was involved as project manager in a huge research project on reconstructing Roman torsion catapults. In recent years, his research focused on the perception and representation of dichotomies and binaries in ancient military history; he is currently preparing a book on this topic.
