Resumes, Applications and Interviews
Resume
Your resume is usually the what a potential employer will request from you. It’s their first impression of you, and if it’s not up to scratch, it can let you down. UNE Employability and Careers provides students the ability to have their resumes checked over and critiqued. This is free service for every student, whether you’re on campus, or from half way across the world. Having a professional eye run over your resume could mean the difference between a good first impression or not.
If you believe your resume is current, we welcome you to email your document to careers@une.edu.au for assistance.
Applications
Cover Letters
Your cover letter is just as important as your resume, as it's typically the first document employers read when considering your application. Some employers even consider your cover letter more important than your resume because it gives insight into who you are and convinces them whether or not they should continue reading your resume. This is why you should make sure you have a polished and professional cover letter.
You can start to draft your cover letter using the Cover Letter Builder This is an online step-by-step process to take you through the basics. Once your draft is complete, email it to a UNE Careers Coach via careers@une.edu.au for further assistance.
Selection Criteria
Many people applying for government jobs for the first time may not be aware of the importance of selection criteria responses. It is a critical part of most government applications and essential to creating an outstanding application.
Even if you have a brilliant resume that shows you have excellent skills and qualifications to do the job and you have written an absolutely sensational cover letter, if you don’t address the selection criteria in a separate document that explains how well you fit each criterion, chances are you will be overlooked. Fulfilling the selection criteria to the satisfaction of the selection committee is the only way you can make it across the line to the next stage of the recruitment process – the interview.
