CAUL negotiations update
The Council of Australasian University Librarians (CAUL) has been in negotiations with several academic publishers around access and publishing agreements.
Elsevier (ScienceDirect) Update (Dec 2026)
CAUL has reached an in-principle with Elsevier. This means:
- your access to Elsevier content (including ScienceDirect) will continue uninterrupted into 2026.
- uncapped hybrid open access publishing across the full Elsevier portfolio, including Cell Press and The Lancet. Gold OA titles are not included in the agreement.
Negotiations between CAUL and Elsevier restarted in December after pausing in November.

Agreements have also been reached with Springer Nature and Wiley
Taylor & Francis Agreement
CAUL has reached an in-principle agreement with Taylor & Francis. Under this deal, authors from participating institutions (e.g. universities) will be able to publish
- in hybrid and gold Taylor & Francis journals
- without individual article processing charges (APCs)
- from 1 January 2026.
The Taylor & Francis agreement presents a strengthened open access publishing route for 2026.
