Photography competition
UNE students study in environments all across Australia. We invite you to discover the First Nations' Country on which you study and share your story with us. This year the focus is on local icons - places, objects or people*. Enter this competition by submitting an original photograph of a local icon. Include the name of the First Nations' Country and the local council name (shire, region or city). Tell us the story of your local icon.

Entries open on 9:00am Monday 31 March and close on Monday 9 June at 11:59pm.
Six (6) winners will be selected by our Judging panel. These winners will receive
- a $100 voucher from the UNE Bookshop
- an A3 print of your winning image
- a copy of local Armidale photographer Terry Cooke's book ''Mount Duval".
- the opportunity to have your work exhibited on campus and online.
Only current UNE students may enter this competition.
How to enter
- Take an original photo of your local icon - some place, something or someone* significant to you and/or your local area.
- Discover the name of the First Nations' Country you have photographed. Whose country am I on?
- Tell us your story (Optional). In less than 100 words explain how this icon is significant to you/your local area.
- Submit your photo. Include the name of the Indigenous Country, your local council name (shire, region or city) and your story.
You can submit multiple photographs. However, you must submit each photograph separately.
*If your submission includes identifiable information, such as people, addresses or licence plates you must also submit a Talent Release form signed by the subject. If you include identifiable information for people under the age of 18, your photograph will be disqualified.

Terms & Conditions
For the purpose of these Terms and Conditions: Committee means a panel of four (4) members of the UNE Library and Oorala Aboriginal Centre; 2.1 The Competition is being conducted jointly by the UNE Library and the Oorala Aboriginal Centre for UNE. 2.2 By entering the Competition, the Entrant agrees to abide by these Terms and Conditions. 2.3 To the extent of any inconsistency between these Terms and Conditions and any other reference to the Competition, these Terms and Conditions prevail. 2.4 UNE reserves the right to amend these Terms and Conditions or to cancel or suspend the Competition if an event beyond the control of UNE corrupts or affects the administration security, fairness, integrity or proper conduct of the Competition. UNE will disqualify any individual who has tampered with the entry process or any other aspect of the Competition. 3.1 The Competition is only open to persons who are enrolled as a student at UNE during Trimester 1, 2025. 3.2 Indigenous students are encouraged to submit entries. 3.3 There is no age requirement on individuals wishing to enter the Competition however for participants under 18 years of age a parent or guardian consent is required. 3.4 Committee and Panel members and their immediate families are not eligible to enter the Competition. Entries will be accepted from 9:00am Monday 31 March 2025 to 11:59pm on Monday 9 June 2025, AEST. Late entries will not be accepted. 5.1 Entrants can submit entries by via the Competition website https://www.une.edu.au/library/visit-us/news-and-events/your-place-our-country. 5.2 Photos must meet the following technical and content requirements: 5.3 UNE is not responsible for any misdirected, late or incomprehensible entries in the Competition. 5.4 Each entry must be an original photograph produced entirely by the Entrant and the Entrant represents and warrants they hold all intellectual property rights to it. Entries must not infringe on the intellectual property rights of others, plagiarise the work of another person or violate any persons’ rights of privacy. 5.5 Each photograph must be captioned with the Indigenous country name on which the photograph was taken. The Committee reserves the right to change the captioned Indigenous country name to the preferred Indigenous version at the point of publication. 5.6 If the Entrant enters a photograph that identifies a person in any way or identifies a person’s property such as their home, address or licence plate, you must also provide that person’s express written permission. Any entry which identifies a person in any way without their express written permission (which must be provided at the time of submission of the entry) will be disqualified from the Competition. 5.7 Each photograph entered into the Competition must not identify a person under the age of 18 in any way including property such as their home, address or licence plate. Any entry which identifies a person under the age of 18 in any way will be disqualified from the Competition. 5.8 The photograph(s) must not contain any offensive or inappropriate material, including but not limited to hate speech, violence or illegal activity or obscene, explicit or distasteful images. UNE reserves the right to disqualify any entry that violates these standards. 5.9 All details provided by the Entrant must be true and accurate. 5.10 The Entrant is responsible for determining the appropriate permissions or releases that may be required for their entries. 5.11 Images submitted with watermarks or branding on them will be disqualified. 5.12 The Competition winners may be required to sign a statutory declaration regarding the originality of their entry. 5.13 Without limiting the generality of the foregoing, UNE reserves the right to take legal action against anyone found to have breached these terms. 5.14 UNE reserves the right in its sole discretion to disqualify any individual who UNE has reason to believe has breached any of these conditions, or engaged in any unlawful or other improper misconduct calculated to jeopardise the fair and proper conduct of the Competition. UNE’s legal rights to recover damages or other compensation are reserved. 6.1 The initial review of images will be completed by the Committee. 6.2 Shortlisted semi-finalists will not win a prize as a result of being shortlisted. 6.3 Shortlisted entries may be asked to provide a high-resolution original file for final review. 6.4 If any of the shortlisted images are found to be in breach of these Terms and Conditions, they will be disqualified. 6.5 The second round of the deliberation process will be decided by the Panel using the following criteria: 6.6 There will be no correspondence between Entrants and the Committee or Panel throughout the deliberation process. 7.1 The winning six (6) entries will each be awarded a prize in the form of a textbook voucher with the UNE Bookshop and a print copy (A3) of the winning photo to be picked up from the UNE Armidale campus or sent to the winning Entrant’s UNE postal address. 7.2 Entrants can submit multiple entries. However, each Entrant may only have one winning entry. 7.3 Prize recipients must be agreed upon by the Panel. 7.4 Winners will be announced during the month of July 2025 through the UNE website and social media. Entrants consent to UNE using their winning entry photograph and their name when announcing the winners however Entrants can withdraw their consent to using their name by advising UNE at the time of submitting their entry 7.5 All decisions from the Panel are final. 7.6 Any prize recipients subsequently found by UNE to have breached these Terms and Conditions must return any awarded prize within 30 days of a request to do so. UNE will have the final decision on what to do with the prizes. 7.7 UNE will not be responsible for any costs associated with winning or delivery of the prizes unless specifically stated in these Terms and Conditions. 7.8 Prizes are not transferable or exchangeable and cannot be taken as cash. The vouchers need to be fulfilled within the terms and conditions of the UNE Bookshop. 8.1 All copyright in each photograph submitted to the Competition remains with the Entrant. 8.2 UNE asserts no claims to the rights of any photograph entered into the Competition. 8.3 By entering the Competition, Entrants grant UNE a non-exclusive, perpetual, irrevocable, right to copy, publish, communicate, perform, play, re-broadcast, adapt and modify the whole or parts of the photograph in any format, platform, server, database, or communication channel, that is currently available and those which may be available in the future, for any use or purpose that UNE deems appropriate. 8.4 If UNE uses any images as set out above, the Entrant will be credited. 8.5 If an Entrant wishes to withdraw consent to the use of their entry, the Entrant can do so by contacting yourplaceUNE@une.edu.au. UNE will make every effort to cease using the entry in any future publications after the consent is withdrawn but is not obliged to remove the entry from any publications published in any format prior to the consent being withdrawn. 8.6 UNE will not be liable for any third party misuse of images. 8.7 Each Entrant acknowledges that UNE is under no obligation to use their entry. 9.1 You must not use the UNE website or the #yourplaceUNE hashtag on social media content to distribute, reproduce, publish, alter, modify, create derivative or exploit for commercial benefit. 9.2 You must not transmit any unsolicited or unauthorised advertising, collect any available personal information from the UNE website on other individuals or upload personal information of other individuals, including their names, address, phone number or any other identifying information. 9.3 UNE cannot guarantee the continuous integrity of its servers. As a result, you may at times experience disruption or other difficulties in using UNE’s website. UNE has no liability for loss or costs of any kind you suffer as a result of or in connection with any disruption or other difficulties in using the UNE website. UNE is not responsible for any failure of equipment or technical error associated with the Competition or for any incorrect information, commission, interruption or delay in operation. 9.4 UNE is not responsible for any theft, unauthorised access or distribution of any entries whether submitted by an Entrant via the UNE website or on social media using the #yourplaceUNE hashtag. 9.5 IP (Internet Protocol) addresses (an IP is the address of a computer) of visitors are automatically logged by our servers. The server makes a record of your visit and logs limited information for statistical purposes – your IP address, top-level domain name (.com, .gov, .edu, .com.au etc), the date and time of your visit to our site, pages accessed and documents downloaded, previous site visits to UNE and the type of browser used. These logs are used to administer the website and to diagnose problems in order to be able to rectify them. This data is also used for research to help us to improve the site. 9.6 IP addresses do not ordinarily contain any personally identifiable information and are aggregated for analysis. Such aggregate data may be used by UNE. Recording usage patterns helps us to identify popular areas of our site and helps us to improve the site. Reports generated on aggregate data may be collated by UNE or its contactors periodically. 9.7 This UNE website may contain links to other sites. UNE is not responsible for the privacy practices or the content of such web sites. 9.8 UNE is also active in several social networking spaces such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and LinkedIn. Please be aware that UNE is not responsible for the privacy practices of these external platforms and users should familiarise themselves with each platform’s conditions prior to contributing in these spaces. 10.1 A cookie is a small file sent by the UNE web server onto your web browser software when you access the UNE website. Some parts of the UNE website may use cookies to maintain contact through a session. The cookies allow us to recognise you as you move from one page of this website to another. The cookies that are used by the UNE website do not collect any personal information and we do not combine information collected through cookies with other personal information to tell us who you are other than to authenticate the user for security purposes. No personally identifiable information is collected by Google from this website by the use of cookies. You can find out more about the kinds of information that Google collects in their Privacy Policy. 10.3 UNE may use Google Adwords to provide re-marketing, online advertisement delivery and tracking. Alternatively, you opt out of a third-party vendor’s use of cookies by visiting the Network Advertising Initiative opt-out page. 10.4 UNE may use Facebook to provide online advertisement delivery and tracking. Information on Facebook’s advertising policy and instructions on how to opt-out are available on their website. 11.1 Competition is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with, Facebook, Twitter or any other social network. The Entrant is providing information to UNE and not to any other party. The information provided will be used in accordance with UNE’s Privacy Management Plan available at https://www.une.edu.au/privacy 11.2 UNE and its related entities collect Entrants’ personal information for the purpose of conducting and promoting this Competition (including but not limited to determining and notifying winners). UNE may disclose personal information collected to the UNE Bookshop and to an agent who is engaged for prize fulfilment. UNE may also disclose personal information collected to Australian regulatory authorities. UNE will otherwise handle your personal information in accordance with its Privacy Management Plan available at https://www.une.edu.au/privacy 11.3 You may request access to or update your personal information or lodge a complaint by writing to the Privacy Officer, at privacy@une.edu.au 12.1 Nothing in these Terms and Conditions limits, excludes or modifies or purports to limit, exclude or modify the statutory consumer guarantees as provided under the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 (Cth), as well as any other implied warranties under similar consumer protection laws in the State and Territories of Australia (‘Non-Excludable Guarantees’). For any Non-Excludable Guarantee in relation to any prizes awarded under these Terms and Conditions for which UNE is able to limit the remedy for a breach, the liability of UNE for breach of the Non-Excludable Guarantee is limited to one or more of the following at the Promoter’s option: 12.2 With respect to this Competition, except for any liability that cannot by law be excluded, including the Non-Excludable Guarantees, UNE (including its respective officers, employees and agents) is not responsible for and excludes all liability (including for negligence), for any personal injury; or any loss or damage (including loss of opportunity); whether direct, indirect, special or consequential, arising in any way out of, relating to, or in any way connected with: (a) any technical difficulties or equipment malfunction (whether or not under UNE’s control); (b) any theft, unauthorised access or third party interference; (c) any entry or prize claim that is late, lost, altered, damaged or misdirected (whether or not after their receipt by UNE) due to any reason beyond the reasonable control of UNE; or (d) any tax liability incurred by a winner or Entrant. 12.3 To the maximum extent permitted by law, UNE expressly disclaims liability for any loss or damage whatsoever (including but not limited to indirect or consequential loss) or for any personal injury which is suffered or sustained in connection with any Entrant’s participation in the Competition or the acceptance of the prizes. The winners indemnify UNE against any liability, injury, loss or damage which may be suffered, incurred or sustained by UNE arising out of, relating to, or in any way connected with, any act or omission (including negligence) by the winners, or their use of the prizes, or their breach of these Terms and Conditions. 12.4 The competition is governed by the laws of New South Wales, Australia. Each Entrant irrevocably agrees that the courts of New South Wales shall have exclusive jurisdiction to hear and decide any suit, action or proceedings and/or to settle any disputes which may arise out of or in connection with the Competition and, for these purposes, each Entrant irrevocably submits to the exclusive and binding jurisdiction of the courts of New South Wales.
Competition means the UNE library and Oorala student photography competition;
Entrant means a person that enters the Competition;
Panel means the three (3) judges nominated by UNE to act as the panel and as listed on the Competition website; and
UNE means the University of New England
5.2.1 Image Size (min 3MB)/Resolution (min 300dpi); and
5.2.2 Any content or theme requirements outlined on the Competition website.
6.5.1 Technicality (Framing, Clarity, Balance);
6.5.2 Originality; and
6.5.3 Storytelling.
12.1.1 the replacement of the prize or the supply of an equivalent prize; or
12.1.2 the supplying of the prize again.
