Dr Richard Jones

Dr Richard JonesDr Richard Jones teaches in Humanities and at the Oorala Aboriginal Centre at UNE. He grew up in Papua, where his father, a seismologist and keen photographer, frequently documented tribal life in remote regions. The experience rubbed off.

Richard started his career as an ABC cinematographer and journalist. He is now an independent writer, producer and director, photographer and film production teacher. He has made 27 publicly funded films and has worked as a

  • Writer-in-Residence (RMIT),
  • Production Fellow (QUT),
  • Associate Professor (UNE), and;
  • Professorial Fellow (VCA).

Richard has taught 'participatory photo-storytelling' with

  • men in maximum security prisons,
  • women in post-release settings,
  • 'at risk' youth, and;
  • newly arrived refugees.

He has also taught photography with local NGOs in Timor-Leste and Bali.

Richard's PhD, entitled 'Shooting the Breeze: Participatory Photo-storytelling with Young Adults in Timor-Leste', won a 2016 UNE Chancellor's Doctoral Research Medal.
