Mathematics Education
Yes ...to teaching mathematics!
With a shortage of qualified teachers of mathematics in Australia and overseas, the future is bright for all students who qualify as secondary mathematics teachers. In addition, there is an increasing emphasis on the development of subject area specialists at the primary level.
Mathematics is a core discipline in school education. At UNE, our units of study in mathematics education are offered in both primary and secondary curricula. These units are research-based and include all strands of the mathematics curriculum. Our units of study will equip you to teach mathematics in every state of Australia.
Primary teaching: students undertaking any of the pre-service primary courses will study three units of mathematics education. One of these units will focus on personal mathematical development. The other two units will be curriculum focussed.
Secondary teaching: mathematics education units are offered at both Junior Secondary (Years 7 – 10) and Senior Secondary (Years 11 – 12) levels. Entry requirements for the secondary pre-service units are detailed under unit requirements, and meet NSW Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards expectations.
