History, Ancient History and Archaeology

Whether you're looking to make a career out of delving into our recent or ancient history, or you just have a fascination with uncovering relics and interesting facts from society's past - or even your own family's history - then UNE has a course for you. As online education specialists, our courses enable you to study in your own time, at your own pace, yet help is only a mouse click away, either from a lecturer, tutor, or even a fellow student.

History

Napoleon once said "History paints the human heart". He was right. History provides the key to understanding ourselves and others. Knowledge of the past helps us interpret human behaviour and society, allowing us to account for the origins and nature of our modern world, while preparing us to better understand how we might evolve in the future. History is also fun. It is one of the oldest, most essential and most rewarding components of a liberal education, providing fertile ground for contemplation and imagination

Studying history will empower you as an independent thinker. The skills of a historian include the capacity to critically assess various kinds of evidence, to navigate and evaluate varied, often conflicting interpretations, to engage in debates and construct coherent arguments, while appreciating the complexities of human behaviours and organisations.

We offer units in Australian History, Local Family and Applied History, European History, American History, Medieval and Early Modern History and Asian History. Please see the course options below.

Ancient History

Ancient history explores the unforgettable story and enduring legacy of some of the world's most fascinating civilisations. Constantly fresh, frequently challenging, always entertaining, the study of ancient history provides a fascinating journey through time to reveal the glories, grief, triumphs, and tragedies of the people, places, and practices of the ancient world.

While studying ancient history you will engage with questions about identity, continuity, change, and conflict in human society. Our units investigate the rich tapestry of the cultural achievements of the ancient world: the literature, law, art and architecture, political events, social institutions, thoughts and ideas that embody the civilisations of Greece, Rome, Egypt and Near East.

All of our units in History and Ancient History can be studied as stand alone units, or as part of the following courses:

Diploma in Arts
Advanced Diploma in Local, Family and Applied History

Archaeology

Archaeology is the study of human behaviour through the recovery and analysis of artefactual and environmental traces. Drawing on both the humanities and the sciences this discipline aims to extract the maximum amount of information from the incomplete remains of the human past.

Whether you have a passing interest in archaeology or you're determined to become a practising archaeologist, our undergraduate courses are well suited to the needs of students studying on campus or online. In our units you will discover the world's great archaeological sites, the story of human society, from our earliest ancestors to the origins of the modern world, and the field and laboratory techniques that archaeologists use to unlock the past.
