Monique joined UNE Law School in August 2017, where she teaches Criminal Law and coordinates the Law School's Higher Degree by Research program.
Monique's primary research interests are jurisdiction, defences and immunities in international criminal law. Much of her recent research has focused on questions arising in relation to the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court (ICC) over nationals of non-states parties. This was the topic of her PhD thesis at the University of Melbourne which will be published as a monograph by Cambridge University Press in 2020. Monique's other main area of research is on legal issues relating to nuclear disarmament and extended nuclear deterrence.
In addition to her academic research, Monique undertakes pro bono advisory projects for non-governmental organisations on contemporary issues of public international law.
Prior to joining UNE, Monique was a Research and Teaching Fellow at Melbourne Law School, and a sessional tutor at La Trobe University. While working on her PhD, Monique spent five months as a visiting researcher at Harvard Law School in 2015.
Prior to academia, Monique worked at the Federal Court in South Australia, and interned at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague, the South Asia Human Rights Documentation Centre in New Delhi and the International Criminal Court UN Liaison Office in New York.
