As part of its commitment to supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, the Oorala Aboriginal Centre has put together two new financial support initiatives: the Oorala Study Support Scholarships and the Oorala Merit Prize.

for Undergraduate and Enabling Course Students

The Oorala Study Support Scholarships are an exciting new suite of scholarships designed to  kick start the students study needs and to enhance the on-line study experience of our commencing and continuing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

The Oorala Centre has led the development of  these new scholarships in cooperation with Dixson Library, UNE IT-Services, Dell and the UNE Special Needs Unit.

Study Support Scholarship recipients will be Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students enrolled in an undergraduate or enabling course who can demonstrate financial need and meet all other eligibility criteria. Priority will be given to students from regional and remote areas.

For students who commenced their study in the year of application, includes:

  1. Internet Access Voucher - $750
  2. Book Voucher - $500
  3. Dell Laptop computer - (awarded once during study)

Oorala, in collaboration with UNE’s Special Needs Unit, is also offering a Disability Support Package worth $500 which can be used in addition to UNE’s existing support services for students with a disability.

Eligibility criteria:

  1. Recipients must be an Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person and must satisfy the Confirmation of Aboriginality Criteria.
    1. Confirmation of Aboriginality and Torres Strait Islander Identity Rule  (UNE)
    2. Confirmation of Aboriginality and Torres Strait Islander Identity Procedures (UNE)
  2. Recipients must be undertaking an undergraduate or enabling course.
  3. Financial Need with a threshold of less than $65,000 to be determined by Centrelink Income Statement, Group Certificate, parents income if dependent.

  4. Valid enrolment in a course of study at UNE post-Census Day.
  5. Applicants must be enrolled in a minimum of 24 credit points in the academic year.
  6. Applicants for a Disability Study Support Package are required to
    1. Register with the Special Needs Office or call 02 6773 2897 and
    2. Submit a copy of their Study Access Plan within 14 days of the application closing date to oorala-scholarships@une.edu.au.
Additional Information for the Study Support Package Scholarships:
  1. All Aboriginal Study Support Scholarships are offered annually.
  2. Priority will be given to:
    1. Regional and Remote applicants based on the Australian Government definitions of Regional and Remote areas. http://www.doctorconnect.gov.au/locator

    3. External on-line students with limited access to university facilities.
    4. Applicants who have not previously received a Commonwealth Equity Scholarship.
  3. Funding, if available, may be awarded for separate components of each package where available packages are not fully awarded.

* For the purposes of these Scholarships

  • a commencing student is defined as a students who has commenced their UNE course in the year of their Scholarship application
  • a continuing student is defined as a students who has completed a minimum of 24 Credit Points
