Eligibility Criteria:
  1. Recipients must be an Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person and must satisfy the Confirmation of Aboriginality Criteria.
    1. Confirmation of Aboriginality and Torres Strait Islander Identity Rule  (UNE)
    2. Confirmation of Aboriginality and Torres Strait Islander Identity Procedures (UNE)
  2. Recipients must be currently enrolled in a UNE enabling, undergraduate or postgraduate course. This applies to part time (PT), full time (FT), on campus (OC) or online (OC).
  3. The applicant will be in financial need with threshold of less than $65,000. The applicant should attach evidence to support financial need, which may be:
    1. A copy of a Centrelink statement or their Income Tax Statement (if independent) and/or
    2. Their parent’s/parents’ Income Tax Statement/s (if dependent)
Additional Information for Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarship:
  1. Priority will be given to applicants from a Regional or Remote area. Regional and remote is assessed according to the Australian Government definitions of Regional and Remote areas http://www.doctorconnect.gov.au/locator
  2. To remain eligible for a Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarship, continuing students must maintain an overall GPA of at least 4.0 each trimester.
  3. If a student has had a Commonwealth Scholarship (Enabling), and upon completion of their TRACKS course they enroll in an undergraduate degree in the following trimester, they will be automatically upgraded from the Enabling Commonwealth Scholarship to the Undergraduate scholarship.
  4. A student will be permitted to take a leave of absence for up to two trimesters during the course of the Commonwealth Scholarship period. A request to take a leave of absence must be made in writing to the UNE Scholarships team prior to the Census Date of the relevant trimester.

How to accept a Commonwealth Scholarship Offer from UAC

If you are successful of an offer of a Commonwealth Scholarship through UAC, UNE will send you an offer form to your UNE email address to complete and return along with your most current income support payment documentation (e.g. Centrelink Statement) a short time after UAC release the offers.

By accepting the offer of a Commonwealth Scholarship the recipient may:

  • be required to inform any of the following persons of the receipt of the scholarship, depending on his or her personal circumstances:
    • an employee of the Human Services Department;
    • an employee of the Department administered by the Minister administering section 258 of the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 2004; and
    • an employee of the Department administered by the Minister administering the Veterans’ Entitlements Act 1986;
  • not qualify for certain other forms of Commonwealth assistance.

Receiving an Offer

Students who receive an offer have to accept the offer within 5 working days. Payments will be made within a month after the census date of the Trimester as long as the eligibility criteria is met.

Documents to be forwarded with acceptance

Students are to provide evidence of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander status to UNE by submitting a ‘Confirmation of Aboriginality’ document (or ‘Confirmation of Aboriginality and/or Torres Strait Islander Status’ document) to the Scholarships Team in Student Central at scholarships@une.edu.au

NB. An Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Incorporated body includes all Land Councils and Aboriginal Medical Services as well as any organisation listed with the Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations (ORIC).

Retaining the Scholarship

In order to retain the Scholarship the student must maintain a GPA of at least 4.0 each trimester. If the student does not achieve a GPA of at least 4.0, they will be asked to email Scholarships, Prizes and Awards via AskUNE within 10 days of notification, explaining why they have not achieved a GPA of 4.0 and to provide supporting documentation which will be forwarded to the Commonwealth Equity Scholarship Committee for review.

If a student has had a Commonwealth Scholarship elsewhere between 2010 and 2016, any periods of payment they received will be counted when they commence the same Scholarship at the University of New England.

If a student has had a Commonwealth Scholarship (Enabling), and upon completion of their TRACKS course they enrol in an undergraduate degree in the following trimester, they will be automatically upgraded from the Enabling Commonwealth Scholarship to the full Scholarship which covers up to 8 trimesters.

A student will be permitted to take a leave of absence for up to two periods during the duration of their Commonwealth Scholarship. This request must be made in writing to Scholarships prior to the Census Date of the relevant trimester.

Any request to vary the conditions of the Commonwealth Equity Scholarships must be made in writing and will be determined at the discretion of the Indigenous Scholarships Committee.

They will be required to provide their request in writing for the Trimester required through AskUNE with supporting documentation. This will be forwarded to the Commonwealth Equity Scholarship Committee for an outcome.  The student will be notified of the outcome through their UNE email address.

Retaining the Scholarship

Students will be requested to provide their most current proof of Financial Disadvantage e.g. Centrelink Payment Summary Form for each Trimester. This will be requested via email and must be provided before the Census Date of each relevant trimester.

A student will be permitted to take a leave of absence for up to two periods during the duration of their Commonwealth Scholarship. This request must be made in writing to Scholarships prior to the Census Date of the relevant trimester.

In order to retain your Scholarship you must maintain a GPA of at least 4.00 in Trimester One and Trimester Two. If in the 1st Trimester of their scholarship, the student does not pass any units, the Scholarship will be withdrawn.  A recipient will receive only ONE warning if they fail to meet the GPA of at least 4.00 for a Trimester.

Payment

Payment of Commonwealth Scholarships occurs within a month after the Census Date for Trimester 1 and 2.

Full time and Part time students will be paid the full amount for the Trimester for up to 8 periods for Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarships and the Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships.
