Gases

Many people across a wide range of industries including manufacturing/ maintenance, medical, hospitality, science and education use gases from compressed cylinders and reticulated systems. The pressure at which gases are contained in cylinders can be extremely high.

All gas products (domestic, commercial and industrial) supplied and installed in Australia must comply with certain safety requirements specified by the gas industry regulators. For example, all new gas appliances that installed need to comply with AS 5601, the Australian Standard for gas installations. Users should also refer to relevant legislation, regulations, codes of practice and Australian Standards.

To maintain and continue to improve the current safety record for the use of gases, increased knowledge and understanding of the DO’s and DON’Ts is essential.

The whs-g026-UNE Working with gases Guideline provides advice on measures needed to work safely with gases at UNE.

Faculties, schools, directorates and professional services units are encouraged to use this document as a primary reference when developing local procedures to safely manage work with gases.

For new users of gas cylinders, it is highly recommended they receive adequate training and guidance prior to use.
