Rural Telemetry

Staff from the Institute for Rural Futures developed a range of telemetry solutions over the past year. This technology uses the Internet to enable farmers to control and monitor livestock movements and boundary security on their properties from any location.

A trial site was established on a property in the Walcha district, with the assistance of Telstra Country Wide. This system allowed the farm gate to be opened and closed remotely, while the technology can also be used to activate irrigation and trough systems.

The farmer can activate and monitor via camera the various aspects of the system using an internet connection from virtually anywhere in the world. Similarly, a text message can be sent to the farmer's CDMA mobile phone if the gate has been opened.
