J H Bishop Postgraduate Scholarship in Classics & Ancient History

Background

The late Emeritus Professor John Huntley Bishop agreed in 1997 that his name may be used for the title of this eponymous scholarship.  Professor Bishop (1921-1999) held the Foundation Chair of Classics at UNE from 1959-1980.  The Bishop family has been supportive of this initiative.  About 100 donors have contributed to the fund over the years.

Details 

The scholarship is valued at $5,000.00 per annum paid in two instalments, and is available for up to two years for a master degree and three years for a doctoral degree. Candidates must be enrolled in a MPhil or PhD either online or on campus (on campus is preferred and be studying in Classical Languages or Ancient History.

Eligibility and Assessment Criteria

The applicant must be an Australian Citizen or permanent resident as defined by the Commonwealth. Full-time preferred, though part-time may be considered.

Applicants must have an outstanding first degree from any university in Greek, Latin, Classics or Ancient History and enrolled or enrolling in postgraduate research at the University of New England in Classical Languages or Ancient History.

The applicant must be undertaking research in the area of Classical Languages or Ancient History, including linguistics, history, philosophy, religion or literature, excluding art history or archaeology.

Ancient History applicants must have a minimum of two years formal study of Latin or Greek (or both) to be eligible to apply.

Selection Criteria/How to Apply

Students applications will be assessed and the successful recipient will be selected based on in order of academic merit, and then application.

Candidates must complete the following HDR Scholarship Application form and submit to the UNE Graduate Research School along with the following.

  • Evidence of Australian citizenship or permanent residency
  • Certified copies of degree transcripts
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Outline of proposed/current PhD/MPhil Research Project
  • Copy of BA thesis and other research, published and unpublished
  • The names of two confidential references, with at least one an academic staff member at UNE

Preference may be shown to students undertaking postgraduate research on campus, full-time. In the absence of this applications will be considered in this order. On campus, Part time and then moving to online applications either full-time or part-time.
