Working With Your Supervisor

Introduction

A supervisor is there to guide you through every part of the PhD process. As well as sharing their extensive knowledge of the research field that you are entering into, your supervisor will offer you advice and support, and introduce you to the broader research community.

To get the most benefit from supervision, you will need to develop an effective working relationship and clear communication with your supervisor. This can take some time and effort.

This module is designed to help you get the most from supervision by:

Considering the various forms and styles of the supervisor-student relationship
Ensuring supervision meetings are productive
Understanding the roles and responsibilities of Schools, supervisors and candidates
Providing guidance to help you evaluate student-supervisor interactions and manage difficulties

How many supervisors do you have and where are they located?
What types of support and/or direction do you hope to get from your supervisor throughout your candidature?
What style of supervision would you expect to suit you best? Why?
