Workspace

Establishing a workspace is an important first step for all students. Lab space is usually provided for science students working on practical research projects. A dedicated work space with access to a computer, within the School or elsewhere on campus, is available for higher degree research students, under the provisions of the Minimum Facilities for UNE Postgraduate Research Students Policy.

Arts and humanities students may find it more difficult to secure adequate work space on campus. Shared office spaces and computer labs can be a great way of meeting other PhD students, but they are not ideal for research that requires extensive reading, thinking and writing.

If this is the case for you, spend some time setting up a good home office. Whether it is on campus or at home, a good work space is one that is free of distractions or suits your preferred workstyle. It should be a space that is dedicated to your research. A computer with Internet access will allow access to the full library catalogue, ensuring that time spent on campus can be spent talking to supervisors, colleagues or otherwise networking.
