Learning Commons

The Learning Commons on Level 2 of the Dixson Library Building provides state-of-the-art computing facilities, access to support staff, and spaces for group work and individual study.

The are two Problem-Based Learning (PBL) Rooms that are bookable online.

The Commons facilities include wi-fi access and secure lockers. There are also loanable wi-fi equipped laptops for in-library use.


You can print, scan and copy using any of the multi-function devices (MFDs) located in on Levels 2 and 3. There is a MFD in the Learning Commons on Level 2, one in the Current Serials room on Level 3, and another in front of the 400s (also on Level 3).

Microfilm viewer

There is a ScanPro 2000 microfilm viewer for use in the Reserve area next to the Service Desk on Level 2.

This machine will read 35mm microfilm, microfiche and opaque cards. Printed instructions are available next to the machines. If you require assistance, please ask at the Service Desk.

Informal Learning Spaces

The south-west and south-east corners of the Learning Commons on Level 2 function as Informal Learning Spaces.

These are multipurpose, collaborative learning areas for students to congregate, share ideas, socialise and receive assistance from Academic Advisors and other support staff. They are ideal for peer assisted learning.

If you are looking for a quiet place to study, head upstairs to Level 3 or Level 4, where you will find a number of computer workstations and Group Study Rooms. Many of the group study rooms are bookable online. There is also a quiet study area on Level 1.

Rooms available for medical students

A dedicated Medical Students Study Area is available on Level 2, just behind the vending machines adjacent to the Reserve.

Medical students can access certain rooms normally reserved for Library staff after 5.00 PM weekdays and during weekends. The rooms are:

  • Staff Meeting Room (Level 2, east side of Learning Commons).
  • Letters Room (Level 2, west side of Learning Commons).
  • Consultation Room (Level 1).
  • Afterhours Room (Level 2, next to First Aid or Room 239).

Medical students can book these rooms by ringing the Library Service Desk on 02 6773 2458.

Users of the facilities in the Library are required to observe the Library Guidelines.
