Items for Exams
Stationary and Writing Implements: Pens, pencils, erasers, highlighters, rulers and other stationary items. If these items are contained within a case, take what you require out of the case and place the case on the floor under your chair.
Drink Bottles: You may have a drink bottle with you for your exam. Please place this on your desk for the duration of your exam.
Wallets, Photo Identification and Personal Belongings: You will need an official photo ID as your student card, driver's licence, proof of age card or passport for your exam. Place your photo ID card on your desk and wallet and keys on the floor under your chair.
Approved Texts or Aids: Not all UNE exams allow the use of texts/notes or aids, but where they are permitted, your unit coordinator should let you know prior to your exam and the exam paper will have this clearly stated on the front page. Your texts, notes or aids will be checked by supervisors during the examination (unless you are completing an Open Book exam) to ensure they are free of any not allowed material.
Approved Model Calculators: For exams where calculators are permitted, your unit coordinator should let you know prior to your exam and the exam paper will have this clearly stated on the front page. Where calculators are permitted, you must use an approved model. Please carefully check the Approved list of Calculators for UNE Exams. Make sure your calculator is in good working order with fresh batteries before you sit your exam.
Not Permitted Items:
Mobile Phones and Electronic Devices: Any electronic devices including mobile phones, tablets, smart watches, fitness trackers, cameras, e-books or any type of recording device must be switched off before entering the exam room and placed either on the floor face down under your chair or in your bag. Flight mode or silent mode is not acceptable, please ensure all alarms are also turned off for the duration of your exam. The supervisor for your exam will advise you on a place to leave your belongings for the duration of the exam if required.
Unauthorised Notes, Texts or Aids: Many UNE exams do not allow any written or typed notes, texts or dictionaries to be taken into or used during the exam. Where these items are permitted your unit coordinator will advise prior to the exam, this information will also be on the front page of your exam paper. Should you find you do have unauthorised notes, texts or aids please bring this to the attention of your supervisor prior to the start of your exam.
Blank Paper or Notebooks: Should you require additional paper for answering questions, draft work or rough working during a paper exam please bring this to the attention of your supervisor who will supply you with a book for this work. Alternatively use the blank pages in your answer book or exam paper. All books and written material must be handed in at the completion of your exam.
Calculators Not on the Approved Model List: If your calculator does not appear on the approved models list, or your calculator is defaced or marked in such a way that the model number is not readable according to the supervisor, your calculator will be considered to be an unauthorised model and will be confiscated, a replacement will not be provided so it is essential that you take note of this list of. Please carefully check the Approved list of Calculators for UNE Exams.
Hats, scarves and headphones/earpieces: Hats, caps, scarves and headphones or earpieces are generally not permitted. Specific head-dress worn for cultural reasons is acceptable. If headphones or ear-pieces are required due to a medical condition, please discuss this requirement with our Access and Inclusion team via AskUNE or phone 02 6773 2000.
Bags in exam venues: Wherever possible, please do not bring a bag into the exam venue. Bags cannot be brought with you to your desk, and we are unable to provide security for bags left unattended. It is best to leave your bag at home or in your car, and only bring items which are absolutely necessary like keys, wallet, photo ID, writing implements, calculator etc. Mobile phones may be switched off and left face down under your chair.
If you are unsure if an item will be permitted to use during your exam please contact the Exams Office prior to the day of your exam via AskUNE or phone (02) 6773 2000 or bring the item to the attention of the supervisor on the day, before you start your exam. Having items that are not permitted during your exam will be considered as misconduct. The penalties for misconduct include loss of credit for the exam, loss of credit for the entire unit and/or exclusion from the University.
