Previous Updates

8 April 2020

To the UNE Community,

UNE continues to implement a ‘containment and prevention’ strategy based on advice from Public Health specialists. Proactive personal hygiene measures and respectful social distancing remain our best defence.

In line with the latest Government announcement, movement on campus is now limited to two people at a time and staying at least 1.5 metres apart. Face-to-face conversations in offices and other areas of work have also been restricted to two people at least 1.5 metres apart.

The Armidale campus is open. SportUNE, Booloominbah Collection and the 'Stro are closed until further notice. Café Life is open and providing takeaway options from 8am-2pm, Monday to Friday.

UNE Study Centres access has been suspended until further notice. The UNE Study Centres team in your region is available to assist students via Phone, Email, Video Chat and AskUNE.

Special arrangements are currently in place for the UNE Regional Study Centres at Coonabarabran, Gunnedah, Moree, Narrabri, Inverell and Tenterfield.

More staff have transitioned to working from home.

Armidale on-campus and residential students have been advised to consider returning home and continue their studies online. No College-based UNE student electing to transition home and study online will be charged for accommodation while they are away.

UNE will continue to provide appropriate support to different student groups completing intensives, field trips etc. provided the activity satisfies the risk assessment. All students can complete their course online and will be supported if they need to change their mode of study.

Funding has been made available from the University to support quick response grants for UNE students experiencing financial hardship impacting their ability to continue their academic studies (course program or research) at the University.

Cyber-security warning: The Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) has warned of a significant increase in people being targeted with COVID-19 related scams and phishing emails. Staff and students are urged to remain vigilant whilst working online. See the link to Stay Smart Online for more.

To further ensure that our business continuity plans address the safety and well-being of staff and students, UNE has agreed to:

  • Limit support for external community activities;
  • Limit key small-scale gatherings to less than two hours;
  • Maintain a strong commitment to effective social distancing and encourage all to maintain a distance of more than 1.5 metres for person-to-person interactions;
  • Provide boxed and wrapped single-serve food in the Colleges and campus cafes;
  • Use only disposable cups, table ware and cutlery;
  • Encourage individuals with compromised immunity systems to seek medical advice and self-isolate at home;
  • Make provision for an enhanced number of flu vaccinations when supplies become available in April;
  • Increase the cleaning rotas in priority public places; and
  • Boost Student Hardship Funds.

Going forward, UNE will also:

  • Promote virtual meeting technologies (e.g. ZOOM) as the preferred mode for business meetings;
  • Develop practical ‘work from home’ scenarios for staff;
  • Extend on-campus quarantine facilities at the Armidale campus; and
  • Agree to special provisions to support casual staff.

Please continue to observe enhanced hygiene practices and connect with all public health advisory notices.

23 March 2020

To the UNE Community,

UNE is implementing a ‘containment and prevention’ strategy based on advice from Public Health specialists. Proactive personal hygiene measures and respectful social distancing remain our best defence.

The Australian National Cabinet met on Friday the 20th March and agreed to further social distancing measures for non-essential gatherings to now include:

  • No non-essential outdoor gathering of 500 or more people
  • No non-essential indoor gatherings of 100 or more people
  • For indoor gatherings, there must be 4 square metres for each person

These do not apply to essential functions such as schools, universities, other education provision and workplaces.

Academic Matters

All academic programmes are still running and will continue to do so.

  • UNE will postpone, defer or re-profile all intensives starting from April 2020.
  • All UNE courses will be moving to an on-line modality including assessments and exams. Programmes which are affected will be announcing their plans to accommodate these changes in the coming days.

Our overall goal is to ensure that students are not disadvantaged by any contingency arrangements at a time of significant disruption and duress. We are conscious of the need to provide ongoing academic support and ensure each student has viable options to progress their studies.

To further ensure that our business continuity plans address the safety and well-being of staff and students, UNE has agreed to:

  • Limit support for external community activities;
  • Limit key small-scale gatherings to less than two hours;
  • Maintain a strong commitment to effective social distancing and encourage all to maintain a distance of more than 1.5 metres for person-to-person interactions;

18 March 2020

To the UNE Community,

UNE is implementing a ‘containment and prevention’ strategy based on advice from Public Health specialists. Proactive personal hygiene measures and respectful social distancing remain our best defence.

International Travel

There is a complete restriction on international travel for staff.

The current advice of the Federal Government is that Australians do not travel overseas at this time. This is their highest advice level (level 4 of 4).

In accordance with the national advisory, all international inbound travellers must self-isolate for 14 days, effective from midnight 15th March. UNE staff or students needing additional support over this period should contact their nominated line manager or unit coordinator.

Domestic Travel

UNE advises that non-essential domestic travel is restricted with effect from midnight Tuesday, 17th March. Staff must use the UNE Travel request system to book essential travel and await approval. Non-essential travel will not be approved.

Events Management

In view of the upgraded advice from Government (ban on non-essential indoor gatherings of 100 people or more) UNE has cancelled or postponed all non-essential events across all of our campuses and those we sponsor in the community

This includes major social events in the Colleges and events sponsored by UNELife.

2020 May Graduation has been cancelled.

Academic Matters

All academic programmes are still running and will continue to do so.

  • UNE will postpone, defer or re-profile all intensives starting from April 2020.

Decisions will be based on advice from the Australian Government about public health concerns and staff safety, including in-country quarantine requirements and the need to quarantine for 14 days on return to Australia.

Domestic Travel

UNE advises that non-essential domestic travel is restricted with effect from midnight Tuesday, 17th March. Again, staff must use the UNE Travel request system to book essential travel and await approval.

3rd February 2020

To the UNE Community,

UNE is monitoring the evolving situation regarding the novel coronavirus, 2019-nCov that has originated in Wuhan City in China. The situation is constantly evolving.

As you may have heard, on Saturday 1 February the Australian Government issued new restrictions relating to the coronavirus:

  • People travelling from mainland China, or transiting through mainland China, will not be permitted entry to Australia;
  • Only Australian citizens, permanent residents, and their immediate family (dependents, legal guardians and spouses) returning from mainland China, or transiting through mainland China, will be allowed to enter Australia and will be required to isolate for 14 days;
  • Australians are advised not to travel to mainland China.

We want to assure you that UNE is working as quickly as possible to respond to the changes, and plan for other possibilities.

Further isolation guidance has also been issued by the government. As of Saturday 1 February, students travelling from mainland China (not just Hubei province) must isolate themselves for 14 days from the day they leave mainland China:

Please see this document for all guidance

For students who may not be able to join us in person at the university for Semester One due to these restrictions, please do not worry. We are already working on options should these restrictions continue for some time.

As mentioned in our recent email, students, staff and the UNE community who have:

  1. Travelled to Hubei province, China, within the past 14 days, must isolate themselves for 14 days after leaving Hubei province
  2. Been in close contact with a confirmed case of coronavirus, must isolate themselves for 14 days after last contact with the confirmed case.

UNE has arranged isolation accommodation on-campus in Armidale as a precaution for returning students who need this requirement and are unable to find a solution. Please email jwall@une.edu.au to register.

Isolation means staying at home or at your place of residence in Australia except when seeking medical assistance, not attending university and avoiding contact with others.

All other students are able to attend University as planned.

We will continue to keep you informed and work with you to ensure as much as possible your studies are not impacted.
