Senior academic in the School of Science & Technology, Associate Professor Neil Smart, has been awarded a prestigious fellowship by the national accreditor, Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA).

The ESSA Fellowship awarded on the 14 April in Melbourne recognised A/Prof Smart’s outstanding and unique contributions to the growth of the field in Australia and now joins 25 other ESSA Fellows.

“It is a great privilege to be awarded the national Fellowship. ESSA is the primary Australian accreditation body for sport and exercise science, with a membership-base of 6,000 professionals and academics, and to be amongst the top 26 Fellows is a tremendous honour,” A/Prof Smart said.

A/Prof Smart is a renowned scholar, having made major contributions to the ESSA Research Committee and authored two ESSA Position Statements, and currently acts as the Chair of ESSA’s Cardiovascular Special Interest Group and Research Committee.

“I have been an exercise physiologist for 25 years and strongly committed to the advancing research in exercise therapy particular for patients with chronic diseases such as heart failure or renal failure.”

A/Prof Smart has also published more than 75 peer-reviewed journal publications in the field and has positively influenced the United States and the European guidelines for heart failure management.

Late last year, UNE’s Sport & Exercise Science program was recently recognised for its ‘well-above world standard’ research by the Australian Council of Research and rated five stars. According to A/Prof Smart, this latest acknowledgement from the national accreditors only adds to the momentum of Exercise & Sports Science at UNE.
