The University of New England’s (UNE) Women’s Soccer Team are Australian University Soccer Champions after winning gold at the Australian University Games on the Gold Coast.
The team defeated Western Sydney University 2-1 in the final, after a solid 10-0 win over Newcastle University in the semi-final.
Tom Bower, UNE Team Manager said, “The girls dominated most of their matches throughout the week, with some stand-out performances by Brooke Sheehan, Gabby Keaton and Jodi Harris, just to name a few.”
UNE Team Captain, Emily Bidgood said “The final was a very hard fought game and came down to a penalty, with the winning goal scored in the last few minutes.”
“We had played Western Sydney earlier in the week and won 2-0, but the final was a massive step up.”
“Most members of our team had played together so we knew each other’s strengths and weaknesses and the centres worked really well together,” Emily added.
Other results from the University Games included a fourth placing for the Men’s Waterpolo Team, fifth placing for Women’s Waterpolo, both the Men’s and Women’s Volleyball Teams placed sixth and individually Luke O’Donoghue advanced to the semi-finals in the 100m, 200m and 400m.
Mr Bower believes it was one of the best games on record for UNE. “We took a team of 70 players and each of them should be congratulated for their conduct, on and off field throughout the tournament.”
