This free public lecture is an eagerly anticipated event for those in the New England region interested in politics.
Senator Wong will be sharing her perspective on contemporary politics. She will reflect on the nature of political commitment and the role of political parties in Australian democracy.
Earle Page Academic Master, Associate Professor Amanda Kennedy says she is thrilled to have Senator Wong as guest speaker for the event.
“Senator Penny Wong holds a unique place in Australian politics as the first woman to hold the position of Leader of the Government in the Senate and then Leader of the Opposition in the Senate,” A/Prof Kennedy said.
“She has been a strong voice on a number of issues from the economy and free trade, through to issues of social equality, including same-sex marriage in recent times. Senator Wong offers a unique perspective on a range of political issues, and her insights will no doubt be fascinating.”
Senator Wong is now the Opposition’s Shadow Minister for Trade and Investment and a member of the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security.
Memorable past speakers at the event include numerous previous prime ministers Bob Hawke, Julia Gillard and Malcolm Fraser.
“It’s an honour to follow in the footsteps of Bob Hawke and Julia Gillard in giving this year’s Earle Page College Annual Politics Lecture,” Senator Wong said.
“The College’s Politics Lecture has played an important part in the intellectual life of the University and of the wider New England region. I am looking forward to my visit and to the opportunity to meet and engage with members of the local community.”
Community members are invited to attend this free public lecture to be held on Wednesday 5 August at the Wright Centre, UNE to commence at 6.00pm.
