The summer holidays have been a busy time for 20 year 11 and 12 students from around the North West Region who are taking part in the Primary Industry Centre for Science Education (PICSE) Industry Placement Scholarship Program. This annual program of PICSE UNE, aims to showcase to the group of tertiary bound students offered a PICSE scholarship the broad range of exciting science based careers supporting the primary industries.
The scholarship consists of a one week Residential Camp which was held during December, a one week of Industry Placement in January where students work as a scientist alongside researchers or in industry, and a Reporting Back Session on 6 February culminating with a scholarship payment of $300! Forty students applied for the 20 places available in May 2012 following school visits from Suz Grieg, PICSE Science Education Officer. Interviews with 28 students were held in July and 20 students were invited to take part in this amazing experience.
As part of the UNE PICSE Camp, students were engaged in activities at the university and had the opportunity to interact with lecturers and post graduate students during the camp. In addition students visited many research organisations and primary industry businesses during the week, hearing about current research being conducted and getting to tour facilities available to researchers and industry at the cutting edge of science.
The Industry Placement in January is a one week experience for students to work with a research scientist or leading industry in the primary industry sector, aiding in current research work or the business workings of their mentors. This is a great opportunity for students to gain a deeper knowledge of what is involved in working in a field that takes their interest, and to develop some new skills in the field or in the laboratory. Following the completion of their placement, the students will return to UNE on February 6 to receive their scholarship cheque and report on their scholarship experience.
