An auction of works by some prominent Australian artists on Friday 31 July at the New England Regional Art Museum (NERAM) will aid two Armidale charities: the Salvation Army and Paws Up.
The auction of works by Angus Nivison, Glory Kngale, Gosia Wlodarczak, Pat Elkin, Marty Branagan, Julia Hardman, Dell Bernett, Stuart Boggs, Ruth Downes and many others is part of the University of New England’s annual Celebration of Sharing fund-raising campaign.
The paintings will be on view at NERAM from Friday 24 July, and the auction will be at 12 noon in the Mazda Theatre at NERAM on Friday 31 July.
Celebration of Sharing is an opportunity for the staff of UNE to contribute to the Armidale community. Each year two charities are chosen to receive funds raised through a variety of activities across the campus. UNE’s Marketing and Public Affairs Directorate launches the Celebration each year with a unique event – this year the charity art auction. The challenge is then laid down for other areas within the UNE community to raise funds in their own way. The funds are combined, and cheques presented to the two chosen charities at Armidale’s “Turning on of the Lights” Christmas celebration.
This year, in view of the economic recession and rising unemployment, the Salvation Army was chosen as one of the two charities.
The other charity – Paws Up – is a program for disadvantaged boys and young men who are given a Border Collie puppy to look after and train under supervision. Once the sheepdogs are fully trained and grown up, they are sold to buy more puppies to help more young boys.
The boys have gone on to compete successfully in Dog High Jumping around the country and are now at national championship level. The organiser of the program, Mr Bernie Shakeshaft, said: ” We are having amazing results through the program, with many boys and young men completely turning their lives around.”
Artists and collectors have been overwhelmingly generous in donating artwork for the auction. “The Celebration of Sharing Charity Art Auction is proving to be a win/win situation for the community and buyers alike,” said UNE Event Organiser Mrs Susan Macarthur. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the artists and collectors of New England for their great generosity in giving such wonderful support to this exciting community event.”
