SUMMARY:Business School Seminar
DESCRIPTION:How consumer beliefs about fish affect expenditure shares and willingness to pay: Scientific research has demonstrated that fish consumption has positive effects on human health. In contrast, meat consumption has been linked to health risks.Governments and international organisations have invested resources to promote fish consumption, but does this investment change consumer preferences so they are willing to pay more for fish than meat? Could these perceptions increase fish expenditure shares or have a detrimental effect on meat expenditure shares?Consumer survey data collected in Modern Metropolitan Lima, Peru, were analysed to assess the influence of selected variables on meat and fish expenditure shares and on consumers’ willingness to pay extra for fish over beef, chicken and pork. The results indicate that among other significant variables, belief that fish is healthy and nutritious for the family increase the willingness to pay extra for fish respect to meats, increases the monthly household expenditure share on fish and reduces it on beef. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness that campaigns promoting regular fish consumption based on its characteristics and health benefits can achieve on willingness to pay more for fish respect to meat and on fish expenditure share. In addition, these outcomes confirm the influence of detrimental spillover effects on meat preferences, which need to been considered by authorities and the food industry. New marketing strategies can be developed to increase the consumption of specific fish and meat products that have positive health and nutrition properties. Furthermore, food processors and retailers could introduce and promote new products in convenient formats for meal preparation and consumption of fish and meat as part of a healthy diet.Luis Emilio Morales is Senior Lecturer in Agricultural Economics - Value Chains at UNE Business School, University of New England, Australia. He has conducted research on consumer preferences and willingness to pay for agro-food products. In addition, he has published research papers on price and premium transmission in Australia, and compared price transmission and marketing margins between developing and developed countries. Emilio has been visiting scholar at the Agricultural Development Economics Division (ESA) of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics at University of Wyoming, the Department Agricultural and Food Market Research at University of Bonn, and the Centre for Global Food and Resources at University of Adelaide. He holds a PhD in Economics from University of New England and a Master on Agricultural Economics from Chilean Catholic University.\n

SUMMARY:UNE Business School Seminar
DESCRIPTION:"Does size matter?": "Does size matter?" - Understanding the impact of non-profit sponsorship roster size on consumer pro-social behavioursThis seminar will discuss the conflicting views in the literature regarding the impact of corporate sponsorship of non-profits on consumer prosocial behaviours.Drawing on signalling and social loafing theories, this work examines the impact of a non-profit’s sponsorship roster size on individuals’ prosocial behaviours toward the non-profit. Results of two experimental studies demonstrate a positive relationship between perceived sponsorship roster size and consumers’ willingness to support as well as willingness to donate to the sponsored-non-profit. The findings also suggest that the perceived impact on sponsored-non-profit mediates this relationship. This study is one of the first that empirically examines the size of a non-profit’s sponsorship roster size in the context of consumers’ charitable giving. It helps to provide evidence-based advice to non-profit managers on how to manage their corporate sponsorships and support from their target consumers.Ravi Pappu is Associate Professor of Marketing at University of Queensland, Business School. DESCRIPTION:"Child care and Maternal Employment: Evidence from Vietnam"

By Dr Hai-Anh H. Dang.: Little literature currently exists on the effects of childcare use on maternal labour market outcomes in a developing country context, and recent studies offer mixed results. This paper attempts to fill these gaps by analysing several of the latest rounds of the Vietnam Household Living Standards Survey spanning the early to mid-2010s. Addressing endogeneity issues with a regression discontinuity estimator based on children’s birth months, the paper finds a sizable effect of childcare attendance on women’s labour market outcomes, including their total annual wages, household income, and poverty status. The effects of childcare attendance differ by women’s characteristics and are particularly strong for younger, more educated women. Furthermore, childcare has a medium-term effect and positively impacts men’s labour market outcomes as well.Dr Hai-Anh H. Dang is an Economist in the Analytics and Tools Unit of the Development Data Group at World Bank. He received his B.A. from Foreign Trade University, Vietnam and his Ph.D. in Applied Economics from University of Minnesota. He has contributed to more than 60 World Bank projects and flagship reports, covering different countries around the world. He conducts research on international development, poverty, inequality, human development, and methodology, to construct synthetic (pseudo) panel data from cross sections. He has published in various development journals, including Economic Development and Cultural Change, Economics of Education Review, Journal of Development Economics, Journal of Development Studies, World Bank Economic Review, and a book on private tutoring in Vietnam. He also serves as a co-editor of Review of Development Economics and on the editorial board of International Journal of Education Development. He received his Ph.D. in Applied Economics from University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.\n

SUMMARY:Business Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Female farmers’ responses to the cost-price squeeze of Australian agriculture: The AARES New England Branch and the UNEBS R&RT Committee cordially invite you to the seminar of Dr Lucie Newsome (UNE Business School). The session will be held THIS Friday 8th November in W40-LT2, EBL Building, at 11:00AM. An informal catering will be provided.Very little has been written about Australian women’s experiences in agriculture since the 1990s, despite women contributing 49 per cent of real farm income. This presentation examines how female agricultural producers are responding to the cost-price squeeze of Australian agriculture.Over a two-year period, 34 in-depth interviews were conducted with female producers in a variety of sectors from across Australia. Dr Lucie Newsome found that female producers are seeking alternative methods of production and marketing, rather than pursing economies of scale. Women are improving the viability of their enterprises through direct marketing, moving to organic produce and other produce that attracts a premium, and reducing the cost of inputs such as machinery, fertiliser and labour.Highlighting the ways in which producers are resisting the pressure to ‘get big or get out’ by engaging in alternate modes of production and marketing to stay on farm is important for Australian agriculture, rural communities and environmental sustainability.Lucie Newsome is Lecturer in Political Economy and Management at UNE Business School. Her research activities focus on the influence of gender in politics, policy and business, particularly agribusiness. She has published in journals such as Social Politics, Australian Journal of Political Science, Australian Journal of Politics and History and Australasian Agribusiness Review.\n

DESCRIPTION:Novus Ordo Saeclorum Resistance, martyrdom, and Christian rediscovery of freedom: Presenter: Omar El ManfaloutyTraditionally, martyrdom has been conceived of as a manifestation of world renunciation, of an act expressing contempt for this temporal world that secured witnesses eternal life in the one to come. However, such public acts of defiance could not fail to turn a martyr into “a speaker of words, and a doer of deeds”, transforming him or her not only into a quasi-heroic object of veneration but also into an, admittedly short-lived, political subject in an age when government had already begun to give way to rule. This paper argues that the public performance of bearing witness, of ostentatious insubordination, resonated deeply with pervasive, omnipresent anxieties of the Greco-Roman world with one-man rule. This was especially so as Augustan self-constraint gave way to unapologetic monarchy. Christian men and women who refused to surrender themselves could be perceived by learned audiences, both Greek and Roman, as almost mockingly picking up the mantle of Classical traditions of autonomy, ataraxy, and virtue in general. Such audiences were painfully aware of the loss of freedom under the Empire, rendering demonstrations of Christian contempt for, and victory over, death in a rapidly shrinking public sphere all the more convincing.Omar El Manfalouty is a PhD student at Goethe-University, Frankfurt, studying Jewish and Christian martyrdom, resistance to the Roman Empire, and the emergence of new concepts of the self in early Imperial times under the working title “The origins of introspection”. He previously studied Law, History, and Classical & Near Eastern Archaeology at Frankfurt University, graduating with a BA in 2017 and an MA in 2018. He joined the Leibniz-Project “Polyphony of late antique Christianity” in 2019. His visit is made possible by a joint Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst DAAD Universities Australia UA research grant. All welcome to this public lecture followed by morning tea.\n

DESCRIPTION:"We are all bodies of water; we are always weathering", Guest Lecture by Dr Astrida Neimanis (USYD): The summer of 2019/2020 was marked by extreme weather events involving too little, then too much, water. These meteorological and hydrological crises are linked to bigger planetary changes, but we also experience them as bodies: we are all bodies of water, and we are all bodies of weather. How we experience these events—and how we contribute to them–are tied to our specific historical, social, cultural and geographical locations in the world. In this lecture Astrida Neimanis offers a watery foray into over a decade of research that brings together feminist theory, place-based thinking, embodied research methods, and our current environmental situation. How might understanding ourselves as bodies of water help us weather these troubling times in more socially just and ecologically attuned ways?If you are not on campus, join via Zoom. This Event is part of the "Weathering Everything: Mini-symposium".\n

DESCRIPTION:What is String Theory?: Presenter: Dr Jock McOrist, UNEEverything in our universe can be reduced to molecules and atoms. These, in turn, can be reduced to a theory of fundamental particles such as electrons and quarks. But what are these made up of? The only theoretically sensible answer we know of is that particles are actually tiny loops of string. The virtue of this seemingly crazy postulate is that when unified with quantum mechanics this gives our only consistent theory of quantum gravity, an outstanding problem at least 100 years in age.Within the past decade this theory of fundamental particles has turned out to have other uses in seemingly unrelated fields. The goal of this talk is to describe the classical perspective of string theory and then to describe my research interest: how can string theory be used to discover new fundamental mathematics. This talk is aimed at a general audience familiar with some basics of the physical sciences.About the speakerOriginally from Coffs Harbour on the NSW north coast, Jock went to Coffs Harbour High School, better known for its spectacular sea view than academic prowess. As an undergraduate at Sydney University, he won the University Medal and first class honours in theoretical physics under Professor Don Melrose. He also won the BHP Science and Engineering Fulbright Scholarship to study for his PhD at the University of Chicago, which was completed in 2009 under the supervision of Savdeep Sethi.Dr Jock McOrist won an EPSRC Postdoctoral Fellowship which was undertaken at the University of Cambridge in the Centre for Mathematical Sciences from 2009–2012. In 2012, Jock was tenured as Lecturer/Senior Lecturer at the University of Surrey. He joined UNE in January 2020.\n

SUMMARY:Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences seminar
DESCRIPTION:Thomas A. Fudge - Thinking dangerously: Thought police and identifying ‘undesirables’, then and now: God squads patrolled the medieval world. Heresy-hunters, inquisitors, witch-hunters, and book-burners defended truth and protected God from being offended. Thought control, limited choices, censorship, demonising, and concerted campaigns of violence were tools of the trade. In this world it was not possible to believe whatever one wished. Curiosity was a disease, books were banned, hands cut off, and tongues pulled out to curtail unsanctioned ideas. Thinking was sometimes criminalised, offenders were demonised as blasphemers, treasonous, perverts, servants of Satan and, in consequence, men and women were burned alive. These attitudes and activities did not end with the Middle Ages. This seminar examines manifestations of intellectual tyranny in the ‘dark ages’ of medieval Europe and in the ‘dark age’ of postmodernity and poses important queries: Who or what should set everyone’s moral agenda? When is censorship necessary? Should controversial and unpopular ideas be banned?Thomas A. Fudge is a Professor of Medieval History at the University of New England. His research has focused on Hussites. He has published 15 books (10 on Hussite history). All welcome to this public lecture followed by morning tea.\n
