Armidale Sanctuary is delighted to announce that Gillian Triggs, former president of the Human Rights Commission and current Acting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner, will be giving the 2019 Annual Sanctuary Human Rights Lecture.

Advocacy for the disenfranchised, disempowered and marginalised has characterised Professor Triggs’ exemplary career.

Armidale Sanctuary has been involved in the settlement of refugees in Armidale since its foundation in 2003. The Australian Government designated Armidale as a refugee settlement town in August 2017, and since that time over 200 refugees, principally from the Yazidi community in Northern Iraq, have been assisted by the Australian government to settle here.  Armidale Sanctuary has been offering social and practical assistance to these new arrivals including helping them with English language skills.

Everyone's welcome to listen to Gillian and to take the opportunity to ask her questions. Gillian will be signing copies of her most recent book Speaking Up.

The lecture will be held on campus at the Arts Theatre 1, on Thursday March 28 — arrive 5.30 pm for 6.00 pm start.

Donations to Armidale Sanctuary welcome.
