UNE Boilerhouse Discovery Space

What is the Boilerhouse Discovery Space?

The Boilerhouse Discovery Space will reinvent the university’s disused, mid-20th century coal-fired boilerhouse as a fun, interactive learning space for young people and their families to engage with Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths (STEAM) based programs.

These programs will stimulate children’s imagination and creativity with play-based experiences in maths, agriculture, energy, music, earth sciences, the brain, language and books and carbon with the aim to generate an interest in lifelong learning.

The reimagined space will include indoor and outdoor play-based activities and will be purpose built to meet the demands of Armidale’s weather and climate. The Boilerhouse will have a range of flexible spaces for onsite learning, functions, events and activities for professional development programs for teachers from across regional NSW.

How you can support the Boilerhouse Discovery Space?

The Boilerhouse will need your commitment to become a reality. Your donation will go towards creating this innovative new space that will help to transform the university’s relationship with its region and create new opportunities for the wider community. All donations to the Boilerhouse Discovery Space Appeal are welcome.

Boilerhouse Founding Families and Other Opportunities

If you are interested in making a more substantial commitment towards the Boilerhouse you can become a member of the Boilerhouse Founding Family program.  The Founding Family members have pledged or donated over $100,000 towards this project.

The future of the Boilerhouse?

UNE has already dedicated $3.6m to rehabilitate the boilerhouse site. The Abbott Foundation has pledged funding of $3.5m to kickstart the Boilerhouse Appeal and the NSW Government has provided a grant of $6.1m for the project.

The University is applying for grants from all levels of government and running a major capital campaign to gain support from individuals, families, philanthropic and community partners as well as corporate supporters.

When completed the Boilerhouse will also be the home base for the UNE Voyager outreach program which provides classroom-based STEAM activities for teachers and schools in small and rural communities across the Hunter, Northern Rivers and New England North West regions.
