We met at UNE
-
Anthea Slack and Josh Tombs
It was a very damp weekend for the marriage of Anthea Slack and Josh Tombs in the Hunter Valley of NSW last March, but UNE was proudly on show - in the many guests in attendance and the large St Albert's College marquee that provided emergency shelter. -
Madison Rawsthorne and June and Stan Gilchrist
Many a romance has been borne of chance encounters at UNE. But there have been countless sustaining friendships, too, like the one that has developed between third-year UNE Law student Madison Rawsthorne and June and Stan Gilchrist. -
Ben-Jan Van Hoffen and Samantha Limbert
Ben and Samantha first met at Duval College in 2016. Ben had previously been a resident of Drummond and Smith College but when Drummond was forced to close he switched to Duval. At Drummond, he had been the SFK representative, and it was through the friends he had made at SFK that he met Sam. -
Ruth and Tim Bartlett-Taylor
Ruth and Tim Bartlett-Taylor can't exactly recall when they met at UNE's Duval College. It was possibly at a formal dinner or one of the regular themed dress-up parties. But Tim was in his third year of a Bachelor of Education (Primary) degree when Armidale local Ruth enrolled to study for a Bachelor of Languages. -
Prue and Mark Kesby
The pair met on their very first day, in 1978, and cultivated a friendship over several years during their studies. As a Bachelor of Rural Science student, Prue shared many classes with Mark, a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture student, and their paths frequently crossed socially. -
Sue and Glenn Roff
As Australia's schools continue to reel from the impacts of COVID-19, two highly experienced educators are reflecting positively on what it may mean for our teachers. And after many decades partnering with students, families and their communities, Sue and Glenn Roff have done their homework. -
Jennie and Bob Teasdale
Jennie and Bob met at UNE in 1965 and married in Armidale early the following year. During 53 years of marriage, the couple have worked as educators around the world. Now they are bringing their accumulated experience and sensitivity to the recovery of Kangaroo Island, which is home to some 18 UNE graduates. -
50 Not Out
Friendships forged on and off the cricket pitch have sustained a group of UNE alumni for an unbeaten half-century. And despite many members of the UNEX (ex-UNE) cricket squad now being in their 70s, they're not ready to declare yet. -
Nate Scholes
Duo Prue (Wink) Fleming and Will Scholes met at UNE during Orientation Week in 2015 and their college friendship grew into a creative partnership. The musicians now perform as Nate Scholes and took out the people's choice busking award at this year's Tamworth Country Music Festival.
-
Andrew Murray and Alexandra Oppenheimer
It was a (not so) romantic first meeting for Alex Oppenheimer and Andrew Murray, in the Robb/Earle Page College car park during Orientation Week in 1974. However last year the couple, both UNE Bachelor of Arts graduates, celebrated 40 years of marriage. -
Don and Lee Stammer
Don and Lee Stammer were married 55 years ago, in Armidale's St Peter's Anglican Cathedral, and held their reception at Wright College, where Don resided for his first four years at UNE. Recently they took a nostalgic trip to Wollomombi Falls to evoke the spirit of an occasion almost 60 years earlier. -
Sally Cousens and John Stuckey
When it comes to romance, timing is everything. And so it was for UNE alumni Sally Cousens and John Stuckey, whose union was almost 40 years in the making. -
In honour of Bernie
Friendships borne of UNE’s residential colleges can be formative and enduring. Such is the case with one particular group of sociable, sport-loving blokes who met at Earle Page College in the late 1960s and early 1970s. -
Friendships that have stood the test of time
They have pursued careers in a range of industries and now live all over Australia and even overseas, but friendships forged more than 50 years ago remain as strong as ever for this group of UNE graduates. -
Kylie and Nick Fuad
Their first theatre production at UNE was playing husband and wife in the classic Australian play Brumby Innes. Within two years, they’d made it official. Kylie and Nick Fuad have now been married for 25 years and, among other theatrical life events, survived last year’s devastating Lismore floods. -
Jenny and Barry Buffier
There remains some contention as to when Jenny Johns met Barry Buffier at UNE. Jenny says they were introduced during orientation week in 1966, the first year of Jenny’s Bachelor of Arts degree and during Barry’s second year of Rural Science. However, Barry says it took him a full year to get Jenny’s attention and the first time they went out was during end of year exams. -
Boyd Gudex and Natasha Loi
Meeting at Mary White College in 2007 was the start of a true UNE romance for Natasha Loi and Boyd Gudex. But, like every good love story, its course did not always run smooth.
