My name is Meaghan Victor (nee Unsworth) aka Meggs and I had the opportunity to live at Duval College from 1991 – 1993.  My home away from home for three years of my life, where I became a much stronger and independent woman.

Twenty-Nine years on from my first day in Duval as a Fresher, I live in Sydney and have two strong and independent adult children, Blake and Emily – both of whom are currently undergrads at UNE. I have worked in the financial services sector my entire career and currently work for State Street Global Advisors as the Asia Pacific Head of the SPDR ETF business. I am privileged to hold this position on behalf of our investors and would not have ever imagined holding such a position back in my days at UNE.

As I wear my old Duval guernsey’s during these chilly winter months, memories of my time at Duval are awfully close to my heart. My time living at in College was the period of my life where I became self-aware, focused and independent.

I was fortunate to begin my residence in Duval with an old family friend and during the first few months of first year I expanded my circle of friends attending JCR parties, Commencement Dinner, Woolshed parties and the College Ball. When I recently toured the College with my daughter Emily, I spent much time reminiscing and causally thinking back to memories of my College life. Spending time in the sewing room (which no longer exists), whipping up a new skirt for a Formal Dinner or the night before the Ball, replacing the sleeves of Dean & Jeff’s dinner shirts with flanno sleeves and creating matching flanno bow ties… definitely a different era of College life.

I consider myself to be extremely fortunate to be surrounded by an awesome group of friends, many of whom hark back to my time at Duval. Social media and technology have made it much easier to remain connected during our busy lives of families and careers. We have chosen different paths during our lives post university and Duval College, and still ensure that the milestones are celebrated; 21st, 30th 40th birthdays, Weddings, the birth of children and even grandchildren; with the bonds of our friendship and the Duval College alumni remaining strong.

Even during COVID-19, zoom party catch ups extend within our group of friends who are spread across the country.
