SUMMARY:UNE Business School Seminar A/Prof Michael Kortt (Southern Cross University)
DESCRIPTION:The Effect of Retirement on Health Behaviours: Evidence from Brazil: The UNE Business School R&RT Committee cordially invites you to the Seminar of Associate Professor Michael Kortt (Southern Cross University). The session will be held on Thursday 7th March at 11:00 AM in W39 LT5 and through Zoom (Password: 905563).Light food will be offered.AbstractThis study uses nationally representative Brazilian datasets to examine the effect of retirement on health behaviours. Findings suggest that retirement increases the likelihood of engaging in physical activity and maintaining a healthy diet. However, the evidence that retirement influences drinking, smoking and sleep disorders is mixed. More generally, the evidence for changing health behaviours (i.e., increased physical activity and improved diet) upon retirement could improve health and life satisfaction among Brazilian retirees.Michael Kortt is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Business, Law and Arts at Southern Cross University. He holds a PhD in economics from the University of New England, an MS in public health from the University of Arizona and an honours degree in economics from La Trobe University. Before joining SCU in 2011, Michael spent 10 years working in the government sector as a Director of Research for the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, the Department of Social Security, and the Department of Health. He has published over 110 scholarly outputs, which include over 90 refereed journal articles, book chapters, and two research books. As an applied economist, he has published widely on various topics, including health economics, life satisfaction, public policy and regional economics.\n

DESCRIPTION:A Meat Tasting Extravaganza: Join us, taste a variety of meat for Australian beef and support our team to get to the games. On June 23rd the Indigenous National Games kick off, where the University of New England (UNE) will once again send a representative team. This week-long event brings together Indigenous student-athletes from universities across Australia, competing in basketball, netball, volleyball and touch-football.“The Indigenous National Games are more than just a sporting event” says Matthew Pine, manager of SportUNE and organiser for the team here at the University of New England. He continues “the games are important because it brings together people with a First Nation background in one place where they can celebrate the experience of being university students as well as their Indigenous cultural connection”. When asked why people should participate in the games Matthew responded, “the Indigenous Games provide a way for both online and on campus students to meet and connect with each other and experience travelling to another part of their country”.Funding is essential for sending a team, and Oorala has organized diverse fundraising initiatives to support the overall expenses. The upcoming fundraiser, a meat tasting event, is scheduled for Thursday, March 21, at the Oorala Aboriginal Centre. We are looking for sixty participants, divided into three groups of 20, to engage in taste testing various meats as part of a market research project.Lexie McGourty, Oorala representative and supervisor for the UNE team, explains, "The $1200 generated will contribute to assisting students by covering expenses such as uniforms, accommodation, and transportation during the games."To participate in the meat tasting fundraiser please register.\n

DESCRIPTION:Corporate Transitioning to Battery Electric Vehicles: The UNE Business School R&RT Committee cordially invites you to the Seminar of Associate Professor Alexandr Akimov (Griffith University), "Corporate Transitioning to Battery Electriv Vehicles: Charging Tariffs, Total Cost of Ownership, and the Potential for Load Flexibility".The session will be held on Friday 12th July at 11:00 AM in W40 LT2 and through Zoom (Password: 787505).Light food will be offered.AbstractAdopting cars that are based on non-carbon polluting technologies is an important component of the transition to net-zero emissions. Although existing literature and policy debate focuses mainly on residential car ownership, businesses and public organisations also have their share of responsibility for ‘greening’ their fleets. Early transitioning of corporate fleets delivers the additional benefit of creating a second-hand market in battery electric vehicles (BEVs) for budget-conscious residential car owners.Although significant efforts have been made to drive purchase costs down by continuous engineering innovation and policy action, new BEVs remain expensive. Because the environmental footprint of BEVs depends heavily on the technology of electricity generation, BEV charging is a critical aspect. Encouraging BEV charging at times when greener and (often) cheaper electricity is available benefits vehicle owners, the electricity grid and the environment. This study estimates the total cost of ownership of corporate BEVs in Australia under a variety of charging scenarios. It finds that cost-reflective dynamic tariffs have the potential to drive down the costs of vehicle ownership if charging is done at the appropriate time. The degree of benefit varies according to several key parameters and operational characteristics, which means that efficient charging requires careful planning. If aggregated, corporate BEV fleets might be a useful load flexibility tool for grid operators.Alexandr Akimov is an Associate Professor in Finance at Griffith University. He holds a Ph.D. in financial economics from the University of New England as well as Chartered Financial Analyst and Energy Risk Professional designations. In addition to academic appointments, Alexandr has held the risk management appointments at the National Bank of Uzbekistan. He is an active member of a number of professional and research associations. His two main areas of research are energy and development finance. He has recently contributed to several completed projects sponsored by Reliable Affordable Clean Energy for 2030 Cooperative Research Centre (RACE for 2030 CRC), including on DER business models, taxation and corporate EVs. He currently leads the RACE for 2030 CRC project of flexible demand by business customers and contributed to the project on Strategic Vehicle Integration. He has led and completed the DFAT-sponsored project to train Vietnamese officials about Australian competitive electricity markets. Alexandr has published his research in Energy Economics, Australian Journal of Public Administration, Journal of Clean Energy Production, and others. SUMMARY:UNE Business School Seminar with A/Prof Michael Kortt (SCU)
DESCRIPTION:Economics Education in Australian Public Universities: An Investigation into the Current State: The UNE Business School (UNEBS) R&RT Committee cordially invites you to the Seminar of Associate Professor Michael Kortt (Southern Cross University and UNEBS).The session will be held next Friday 5th July at 11:00 AM in W40 LT2 and through Zoom (Password: 230699)Light food will be offered.AbstractThe study of economics has long been a part of Australian tertiary education from its early beginnings. In this seminar, we will discuss about the current units of study in every Australian public university that provides undergraduate tertiary education in economics. Specifically, this study offers a detailed analysis of what economics education is currently being taught and the types of university entities that are providing this education. In addition, this research looks at the kinds of public value propositions that public universities are advancing in terms of the merit of learning about economics. Preliminary analysis suggests that while the study of economics might appear relatively strong on the surface, it shows that the discipline is in danger of losing its identity, with offerings often being spread across various university entities that do not count economics as their course disciplinary offerings. In particular, the study shows that economics education in Australia continues to be in a relatively parlous state, with economics education being regarded as more of an adjunct or afterthought than an integral discipline area in most universities.Michael Kortt is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Business, Law and Arts at Southern Cross University. He holds a PhD in economics from the University of New England, an MS in public health from the University of Arizona and an honours degree in economics from La Trobe University. In addition, Michael is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the UNE Business School, University of New England.

SUMMARY:July Kirby Seminar
DESCRIPTION:A Living Corpse: Invisible Individuals under the Death Sentence: In this Kirby Seminar, Associate Professor Mai Sato will explain that the body of the executed is the obvious and inevitable outcome of the death penalty. However, to reduce the death penalty to the act of taking away life does not capture the full extent of the punishment. The death penalty begins when an individual is labelled by the State as worthy of death. Individuals live, often for years, under the death sentence. Focusing on Japanese prisoners, this presentation examines what is often an invisible, hard to research, aspect of the death penalty: how individuals live on death row. Much of the Japanese death penalty process is invisible. The Government does not release information on how prisoners are executed, the treatment of death row prisoners or the process of selecting who on death row is to be executed. This presentation uses rare photographs of penal institution in Japan obtained by an NGO and findings from a survey of individuals on death row conducted by the Japan Federation of Bar Associations. It analyses the experiences of individuals on death row glimpsed from photographs, and a survey describes how access to both data were achieved and examines aspects of the death penalty that remain invisible.Join us live or register for the webinar below\n

SUMMARY:UNEBS Seminar with Professor Garry Griffith
DESCRIPTION:Meat Standards Australia: A Retrospective on 25 Years of Aggregate Gross Economic Benefits: The AARES New England Branch and the UNEBS R&RT Committee cordially invite you to the Seminar of Professor Garry Griffith (UNE Business School). The session will be held on Friday 27th September at 11:00AM in W40 LT2 and through Zoom, password: 633341Light food will be offeredAbstractAustralia is recognised globally as a leader in the beef cattle industry, developing innovations in production and processing systems and in both domestic and export markets which have benefitted all beef value chain participants. One of the key reasons for its global recognition has been the design, implementation and ongoing improvement of the Meat Standards Australia (MSA) quality assurance scheme. MSA was first trialled in 1998 and celebrated 25 years since commencement in 2023.In this seminar, the history of the development and implementation of MSA is reviewed, including its alignment with the theoretical principles of the economics of grading and the way in which the initial model has been modified over time. Then, publicly available data is used to estimate the aggregate gross economic benefits to the industry from its implementation, and these benefits are compared with estimates of the costs incurred in researching, developing and operating the MSA beef grading model. The analysis shows that cattle producers, beef processors and beef consumers have all been beneficiaries of the program through the price premiums available for MSA graded beef and cattle. Measured at the retail level, annual gross benefits have risen substantially to over $400 million in the three years to 2022-23. The cumulative value to 2022-23 is estimated to be $3,125 million. These annual gross benefits are eventually distributed to producers, processors, wholesalers, retailers and consumers in relation to the relative slopes of the demand and supply curves at all the various market transaction levels, as the market adjusts over time to the new level of domestic consumer willingness-to-pay for guaranteed tenderness. At the farm level in the last four years aggregate returns as measured by over-the-hook premiums have averaged around $200 million per year. The cumulative value to 2022-23 is estimated to be just under $2,200 million. Over the whole period since implementation, producers have received about 70 per cent of the total available willingness to pay. Impact assessment studies have shown that all past R&D expenditure in MSA has been covered, all industry adoption costs have been covered, all annual operating expenses have been covered, and on top of that, a substantial additional benefit has been generated for the Australian beef cattle industry.Garry Griffith is Adjunct Professor at UNE Business School. He was a research economist with the NSW Government for 38 years, retiring as Principal Research Scientist in 2011. Garry also led the Economics programs in the Beef and Sheep Cooperative Research Centres. He studied at the University of New England, at Macquarie University and at the University of Guelph in Canada. His major research interests are in the application of economic models of Australian agricultural industries to predict the impacts of changes in production technologies, advertising programs, and government policies; the links between the competitive structure of markets and the distribution of the benefits from effective technological change; and price formation processes in food and fibre markets and in the changing nature of the relationships between farm and retail prices. Professor Griffith currently holds a part-time research position in the School of Agricultural, Food and Ecosystems Sciences at the University of Melbourne. He also holds an honorary position at the University of Adelaide and is the managing Editor of the three Australasian agribusiness journals. He currently has research projects funded by ACIAR, MLA and AMPC, and Dairy Australia.\n

Despite this, Denslow remains virtually forgotten in the history of economic thought. This article examines one of Denslow's key contributions to economic thought, namely his migratory theory of profits. Through an examination of Denslow’s major writings, particularly his 1888 Principles of the Economic Philosophy of Society, Government, and Industry, this article demonstrates that Denslow developed a distinct and innovative theory of entrepreneurial profit. Not only does Denslow’s theory reflect the American Protectionist’s emphasis on economic diversification, it also challenges the Classical and Marxist assumption that there exists a general tendency for the rate of profit to fall within capitalist economies. Denslow’s view that profit acts as an endogenous and migratory force which steers resources into new industrial pursuits offers important insights into the dynamics of innovation and the trajectory of capitalist economic development.Mathew Frith is a Lecturer at the UNE Business School. He received his PhD in economics from Federation University Australia in 2024. His dissertation concerned the 19th century American protectionist school of economic thought and was awarded the 2024 Best PhD Dissertation Prize from the History of Economic Thought Society of Australia (HETSA). He is currently transforming his dissertation into a book.\n

SUMMARY:Business School Seminar with A/Prof Ravi Pappu
DESCRIPTION:Time, Products or Cash: What type of donations should firms offer?: The UNE Business School R&RT Committee cordially invites you to the seminar of Associate Professor Ravi Pappu (UQ). The session will be held on Thursday, 10th April at 11:00 AM in W40 LT2 and via Zoom (Password: 467824).Light refreshments will be provided.AbstractThis research draws on attribution theory to investigate how the type of donation (time, cash, or product) affects consumer evaluations of companies engaged in corporate giving. Across two experiments, the study examines how donor warmth and brand reputation moderate, and perceived altruism and brand trust mediate, the impact of donation type on consumer evaluations (company attitude, charitable credit, and word-of-mouth).Study 1: Donating time or product (vs. cash) leads to more favourable consumer evaluations via perceived altruism. The indirect effects of time (vs. cash) donation are more pronounced for low-warmth donors.Study 2: Time (vs. cash) donation results in more favourable consumer evaluations via perceived altruism and brand trust, particularly for brands with lower reputations. This research advances corporate giving literature by uncovering distinct routes (perceived altruism and brand trust) through which donation type affects consumer evaluations. It also confirms the moderating effect of donor warmth and brand reputation.About Ravi PappuRavi Pappu (r.pappu@business.uq.edu.au) holds a PhD from the University of New England, Australia, an MBA from the University of Waikato, New Zealand, and a Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering from JNTU, India. DESCRIPTION:Jane Ahlstrand, 'Women and social mobility: Indonesian and Australian perspectives': For the Zoom link, contact Sandy Boucher at aboucher@une.edu.au.The discourse of social mobility has become a central tenet of democratic societies worldwide. Commonly deployed as a panacea for inequality and source of social justice, the discourse can conceal and even perpetuate inequalities. Intertwined with neoliberal ideology, social mobility discourse is contextually contingent, manifesting differently according to local conditions. This paper critically analyses social mobility discourse in the Indonesian context through ‘rags to riches’ stories of female celebrities in media interviews. Applying a contextually sensitive approach to agency within a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework, this paper contributes new knowledge to the study of social mobility discourse in the Global South. The findings illustrate the pervasiveness of neoliberalism and its coalescence with local ideologies of gender, class, and place, and how upwardly mobile women deploy ideological resources to create a mobility niche. The discourse strategies they use legitimise their mobility but reproduce unequal relations of power, undermining the objectives of social mobility. To end, the audience is invited to reflect on gender and social mobility in the Australian context, including the tertiary education sector.Jane Ahlstrand is a senior lecturer in the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences at the University of New England. She works across the interdisciplinary fields of Gender Studies, Indonesian Studies, and Critical Discourse Analysis, which is a sociolinguistic approach to addressing contextually contingent conditions of socio-political inequality.\n

DESCRIPTION:Gender Development, Inequality, and Boardroom Diversity: A Cross-Country Analysis of Corporate Leadership: The UNEBS R&RT Committee cordially invites you to the Seminar of Associate Professor Subba Reddy Yarram (UNE Business School) and Professor Sujana Adapa (Faculty of SABL).Come along and join us for this insightful seminar! Light refreshments will be provided for in-person attendees. This event can also be accessed via Zoom.Seminar Abstract:In recent years, gender equality has gained substantial global prominence, largely driven by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and related initiatives. Although previous research has explored the causes and effects of gender diversity on corporate boards—mainly from business and ethical viewpoints—there is a notable shortage of recent studies examining how country-level gender development and inequality impact boardroom diversity. This study addresses this gap by analysing data from 8,204 firms in 62 countries, encompassing 59,774 firm-year observations from 2009 to 2024. It investigates how gender development, inequality, and cultural values influence board gender diversity. The results provide strong empirical support for institutional theory, highlighting that organizational practices are shaped by national contexts, especially gender development and equality.About the Speakers:Associate Professor Subba Reddy Yarram: Associate Professor in Finance at UNE Business School, Faculty of Science, Agriculture, Business and Law, University of New England. Since joining UNE in 2006, he has made significant contributions to academia, including receiving a Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning (Australian Awards for University Teaching, 2015) and a Teaching Excellence Award (UNE Business School, 2014). He has supervised 17 PhD students in corporate finance, corporate governance, and financial and environmental disclosures. His research has appeared in prestigious journals including Applied Economics, Singapore Economic Review, International Journal of Managerial Finance, Journal of Cleaner Production, Economic Record, and Policy and Politics.Professor Sujana Adapa: Executive Dean of Faculty of Science, Agriculture, Business and Law, University of New England, and current Chair of the Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), Academy of Management (AoM). Her research interests include gender studies, small and medium-sized firms, and information and technology adoption. She recently published "Entrepreneurship in Regional Communities" (Palgrave Macmillan) with co-authors Emeritus Professor Alison Sheridan and Dr Subba Reddy Yarram. SUMMARY:The 40th Russel Ward Annual Lecture: The Legend of 'Home Duties': Navigating Social Expectation and Economic Necessity in Australia.
DESCRIPTION:: Presented by Dr Catherine BishopIn Russel Ward’s Australian Legend women are conspicuously absent. Indeed, it was apparently a ‘famine of females’ that helped develop Australia’s ‘culture of mateship’ which was, of course, quintessentially male. Published in 1958, Ward’s work is of its time. That we are still talking about it nearly 70 years later is testament to its impact. His marginalisation of women (and Indigenous people) has been well critiqued, but when you think that Ward was describing a legend, rather than a reality, then his thesis does powerfully capture the enduring nature of white Australian patriarchy. The notion that women were peripheral to the Australian story, confined to the home as helpmeets and mothers, was pervasive. Most women recorded themselves in the electoral rolls as performing ‘home duties’, and female achievements within the domestic sphere were celebrated in the media. In practice, however, many women were doing much more. They were part of a family enterprise, in paid employment or running businesses independently. This paper builds on recent research on businesswomen and female department store buyers to recover the women whose economic contributions were obscured by the ‘Australian Legend’.Dr Catherine Bishop is an Honorary Research Fellow at Macquarie University researching Australian businesswomen and female department store buyers. She is part of the ARC Discovery Project ’Shop Talk’, which investigates Australian department stores. Since graduating with her PhD from the Australian National University in 2012, she has published widely, including the prize-winning Minding Her Own Business: Colonial Businesswomen in Sydney (NewSouth, 2015), and Women Mean Business: Colonial Businesswomen in New Zealand (Otago UP, 2019). SUMMARY:UNEBS Seminar Dr L. Emilio Morales (UNEBS)
DESCRIPTION:Improving the Profitability of Agribusinesses: The UNEBS R&RT Committee cordially invite you to the Seminar of Dr L. Emilio Morales (UNE Business School). The session will be held on Thursday 30th October at 11:00AM in W40 LT2 and through Zoom: https://une-au.zoom.us/j/82983894178?pwd=uPP9aYkN0gYlIkGw8RUzerI2hvSL4K.1 (Password: 511879).A light lunch will be offered.AbstractAgribusinesses face increasing challenges to remain profitable in evolving markets where consumers demand high quality, traceability and innovation. This seminar explores how firms across the agri-food value chain can enhance profitability by understanding costs, improving product quality, recognising market opportunities and adopting new technologies. Drawing on examples, the presentation examines how the Meat Standards Australia (MSA) beef grading system has improved consumer confidence and industry returns through quality differentiation. It also analyses consumer behaviour toward functional foods such as quinoa in Peru, highlighting how perceptions of health and sustainability influence purchasing decisions. Finally, the seminar discusses insights from recent research on online versus in-store beef shopping in US, emphasising the role of trust, information, and digital technologies, including blockchain and social media marketing, in shaping modern food markets. Together, these insights provide a practical framework for strengthening agribusiness profitability through innovation, value creation, and consumer-focused strategies.Luis Emilio Morales is Senior Lecturer in Agricultural Economics - Value Chains at UNE Business School, University of New England, Australia. He has conducted research on consumer preferences and willingness to pay for agro-food products. In addition, he has published research papers on price and premium transmission in Australia, and compared price transmission and marketing margins between developing and developed countries. Emilio has been visiting scholar at the Agricultural Development Economics Division (ESA) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics at University of Wyoming, the Department Agricultural and Food Market Research at University of Bonn, and the Centre for Global Food and Resources at University of Adelaide. He holds a PhD in Economics from University of New England and a Master on Agricultural Economics from Chilean Catholic University. You can access his profile at www.une.edu.au/staff-profiles/business/lmorales\n

DESCRIPTION:Seminar of Dr Tasmiha (Tina) Tarafder and Dr Md Parves Sultan (UNE Business School): Leveraging Social Media and Digital Platform for Women-Led Micro and Small Enterprises” and “From Market Segmentation to Advancing the Theory of Planned Behaviour”The UNEBS R&RT Committee cordially invites you to the Seminar of Dr Tasmiha (Tina) Tarafder and Dr Md Parves Sultan (UNE Business School). The session will be held on Friday 21st November at 11:00 AM in W40 LT2, EBL Building, and through Zoom: https://une-au.zoom.us/j/85052331067?pwd=ENw7n0qgajyfXxIRx8r7j0njj6y9bA.1(Password: 558930). Light food will be offered.Abstracts Topic: Leveraging Social Media and Digital Platform for Women-Led Micro and Small Enterprises: Evidence from Bangladeshi Digital EntrepreneursMicro and small startups are often viewed as vulnerable due to factors like limited funding, skills, resources, and ineffective marketing and planning. Their ability to adapt to market changes is also hindered by their small size. This vulnerability is often heightened in women-led micro and small enterprises, especially those from South Asian ethnic backgrounds, which face additional cross-sectional disadvantages. However, digital entrepreneurship offers new opportunities for agile women-led MSEs. Despite these benefits, digital platforms pose unique challenges that are not well-covered in current research. Many women from South Asian backgrounds enter entrepreneurship primarily through social media and informal social capital, sometimes unaware of the full range of emerging opportunities and threats. This paper highlights insights from 10 Bangladeshi female entrepreneurs to explore current and future opportunities and challenges, providing implications for digital entrepreneurs and managers of MSEs.Keywords: Digital entrepreneurship, Micro and small enterprises, Bangladesh, Women, social media.Topic: “From Market Segmentation to Advancing the Theory of Planned Behaviour: A Progressive Multi-Study Contributions to Understanding the Australian Organic Food Consumers”Across six interconnected studies, this presentation builds a thorough and ongoing understanding of how Australian consumers think, feel, decide, and act regarding organic food. The work begins by highlighting a key paradox: despite growing awareness, organic food purchases stay low because of poor communication, knowledge gaps, and consumer mistrust. Early conceptual work views brand communication, consumer knowledge, and trust as essential factors that can turn awareness into action, emphasising the need for clearer, value- focused messaging and stronger cues of authenticity. Evidence shows that poor organic labelling damages confidence and reduces purchases, underscoring the importance of communication across all studies. The diversity of the Australian organic market shows that consumers differ significantly by values, lifestyle, retail choices, and self- image. This segmentation clarifies that organic buying is not a single behaviour but a mix of motivations, barriers, and situations that marketers must address with targeted strategies. The research then enriches behavioural theory by incorporating perceived organic food value into attitudes and actions, revealing that health, environmental, and safety values greatly shape opinions, intentions, and actual behaviour. A cross- country comparison deepens this view by showing how cultural and income differences affect these processes. The next research phase tackles the ongoing gaps between intention and behaviour, as well as perceived control and action, demonstrating that communication, satisfaction, and trust are key moderators that help convert strong intentions into real purchases. The work further progresses with an S–O–R- based model showing that both controlled and uncontrolled communication sources trigger hedonic and utilitarian attitudes, which then influence behavioural intentions- closing the loop between external signals and internal psychological responses. Future work will integrate digital tools like QR codes, provenance cues, community food hubs, behavioural interventions, and sustainability initiatives that align well with UNE' s strengths in future food systems, regional hubs, consumer trust, and sustainable farming.Dr Tasmiha (Tina) Tarafder is an accomplished academic and business lecturer with extensive experience across Australian higher education institutions. She holds a PhD in Management from RMIT University and specialises in human resource management, business analytics, and digital learning innovation. SUMMARY:UNE Business School Seminar Dr Shahid Md Shahiduzzaman (UNEBS)
DESCRIPTION:Embedding Sustainability Skills in Responsible Management Education: The UNE Business School R&RT Committee cordially invites you to the Seminar of Dr Shahid Md Shahiduzzaman (UNE Business School). The session will be held on Friday 13th March at 11:00 AM in W40 LT2, EBL Building, and through Zoom Light food will be offered.AbstractThere has been a growing emphasis on the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in business schools. International bodies and accreditation agencies intensified the focus on SGDs and there is need to embed sustainability competencies within responsible management education. Gaining these competencies means fit-for-purpose and remains competitive in the jobs market. However, questions remain regarding how ESG skills are conceptualised, contextualised and effectively integrated into curricula to improve students’ experience. This study addresses these gaps through a two-stage research design.First, a systematic literature review synthesises existing scholarship on sustainability competencies, responsible management education (RME), and pedagogical innovations in business schools. The review identifies key skill domains and highlights prevailing teaching approaches aimed at fostering critical thinking, ethical reasoning, systems thinking, and applied decision-making. Second, the study presents a case analysis of a responsible management (MM203 & MM503) offered by the University of New England (UNE), a regional business school in Australia. The case study examines how sustainability skills are embedded through curriculum design, assessments, and experiential learning activities. Drawing on student engagement data and feedback, the study evaluates perceived learning outcomes and the effectiveness of pedagogical innovations in enhancing sustainability-related competencies. The findings provide practical insights for business educators seeking to move beyond symbolic integration of sustainability toward meaningful skill development. The study contributes to the responsible management education literature by offering an evidence-informed framework for embedding sustainability skills in business curricula and aligning educational practices with industry and societal expectations.Dr Shahid Md Shahiduzzaman is a Lecturer of Management at the University of New England Business School (UNEBS). His expertise spans sustainability, strategy, and the digital economy, and he teaches management, economics, and finance courses at UNE. Shahid is UNEBS United Nations Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME) Lead. He is also an active member of the ANZAM Sustainability and Responsible Management Group.Dr. Shahiduzzaman has led over 10 research projects funded by internal and external grants and has published extensively in A* and A-ranked journals, including Energy Economics, Global Environmental Change, Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews, and the Journal of Business Ethics. His research has also been featured in major media outlets such as The Conversation, Brisbane Times, Australian Financial Review and the Armidale Express.\n

SUMMARY:UNEBS Seminar Dr Mathew Frith
DESCRIPTION:The Theory of Tariff Incidence: Alexander Hamilton and his Nineteenth-Century Followers: The UNEBS R&RT Committee cordially invites you to the Seminar of Dr Mathew Frith (UNE Business School).Zoom Link : https://une-au.zoom.us/j/83846742978?Password: 911269Light food will be offered.Abstract Alexander Hamilton’s treatment of the tariff features most prominently in his celebrated 1791 Report on Manufactures, yet Hamilton's views on the subject extend well beyond this text. His lesser-known works, Continentalist No. 5 and his Report on the Impost, contain an impressive analysis of tariff incidence grounded in market competition. According to Hamilton, it is the competition between purchase and sale of commodities which conditions whether the incidence of a tariff will be shouldered more by domestic consumers or by foreign producers. By the nineteenth century, followers of Hamilton, including Daniel Raymond, Ellis H. Roberts, Van Buren Denslow, and Henry M. Hoyt, transformed this insight into a dynamic theory which contends that the incidence of a protective tariff has a tendency to shift with industrial development. According to this theory, tariffs on infant industries fall primarily on domestic consumers, thereby naturally providing maximum protection when industries need it most. However, as industries mature and domestic supply increases, tariff incidence will increasingly shift toward foreign producers, thereby reducing the burden on consumers over time. In developing this theory, nineteenth-century American Protectionists offered a sophisticated defence against the claim that tariff incidence falls exclusively on domestic consumers.Dr Mathew A. Frith is a Lecturer in Economics at the University of New England (Australia). In 2024, Mathew received his PhD from Federation University Australia, with his thesis receiving the 2024 HETSA Award for Best PhD Dissertation from the History of Economic Thought Society of Australia (HETSA) and the 2025 Terenzio Maccabelli Prize for Best PhD Dissertation from the Italian Association for the History of Economic Thought (AISPE). His book "America’s Neglected Protectionist Tradition" will be released in August 2026.\n
