The School of Health offers the following extensive range of postgraduate study, taken as coursework or research.

The School of Health has an active and dynamic research profile. Staff and higher degree research students are engaged in a broad range of research projects.

Honours Programs

The Bachelor of Nursing with Honours program provides an opportunity for students, under guidance of a supervisor, to plan and implement a research project in the area of nursing practice. Knowledge and experience gained by students through completing this program will contribute to the knowledge base for nursing practice.

Graduate Certificate in Health Management

Graduate Certificate in Health Management This course aims to meet the needs of health professionals who are required to document evidence of continuing education in order to maintain active membership in their professional associations, the Australasian College of Health Service Management. It is designed to serve as a flexible, self-directed entry into other advanced academic courses such as a Master of Health Management.

Graduate Certificate in Health Professional Education

The Graduate Certificate in Health Professional Education provides you with the opportunity to investigate and apply theory and evidence-based practice strategies that will enable you to design, assess and evaluate, face-to-face and online learning, supervise diverse learners in healthcare education contexts.

Graduate Certificate in Mental Health Practice

Graduate Certificate in Mental Health Practice is an interdisciplinary award designed to equip health professionals to support people with mental health issues and their carers. It will be relevant for all allied health professionals such as counsellors, psychologists, nurses, social workers, general practitioners, pharmacists and other health professionals working with or interested in mental health areas.

Graduate Certificate in Research Methods in Health and Social Care

Graduate Certificate in Research Methods in Health and Social Care is an Exit Award for students who have completed 24 credit points from units selected from the Master of Philosophy (Health).

Graduate Diplomas

Graduate Diploma in Counselling

The Graduate Diploma in Counselling provides professional training to prepare graduates to work in a diverse range of counselling contexts. Offering a combination of theoretical and experiential learning via distance education, the course is ideally suited to individuals wishing to gain an industry-recognised qualification whilst continuing to meet their work and family commitments. The course provides a direct pathway to the Master of Counselling at UNE.

Graduate Diploma in Health Management

Graduate Diploma in Mental Health Practice

The Graduate Diploma in Mental Health Practice provides students with an opportunity to develop advanced level mental health assessment skills and evidence-based practice. The course is designed to equip graduates from a variety of health backgrounds with an ethically sound knowledge and understanding of the theory, principles and practice of mental health practice. The course is underpinned by the bio-psychosocial model of mental health and is designed to prepare competent, self-reflexive, multi-disciplinary health and human service professionals to support people experiencing mental health problems and their families.

Masters

Masters by research and PhD awards are available in the field of counselling, health management, health sciences and nursing.

Masters programs are offered in an off-campus (distance-learning) mode both full-time and part-time. Doctoral awards (PhD) area available both as full-time and part-time awards in both modes:

  • On-campus (internal)
  • Online (distance learning).

Master of Counselling

The Master of Counselling offers an integrative approach to counsellor training and supervision, drawing upon a wide range of theories and evidence-informed practice to equip students with the advanced knowledge and skills-based competencies required by contemporary counselling practitioners. Emphasis is given to producing counsellors who are ethical, self-reflexive, and committed to lifelong learning and ongoing professional development.

Master of Health Management

The Master of Health Management provides the learning material and experiences for students to develop the core knowledge and skills required of healthcare managers in a wide variety of public, private and non-government organisations where services for health and social care are designed, delivered and evaluated. This includes but is not limited to hospital and community settings, the aged care sector, government departments, private practice and small business.

Master of Mental Health Practice

The Master of Mental Health Practice provides advanced professional training in evidence-based mental health assessment and practice. The course is designed to equip graduates from a variety of health backgrounds with an ethically sound, specialised knowledge and understanding of the theory, principles and practice of mental health practice. The Master of Mental Health Practice is underpinned by the bio-psychosocial model of mental health and is designed to produce competent, self-reflexive, multi-disciplinary health and human service professionals to support people experiencing mental health problems and their families, at an expert level.

Master of Nursing Practice

Students who successfully complete the Master of Nursing Practice are eligible to seek Registered Nurse status with the Australian Health Practitioner Registration Agency (AHPRA) as a professional nurse in Australia and by mutual recognition in New Zealand. This is a graduate entry-level course designed for those who hold an existing AQF Level 7 Bachelor degree or equivalent qualification and who are not registered to practice as a nurse in Australia, and who are seeking a career change to the nursing profession.

Master of Philosophy (Health Management)

The Master of Philosophy (Health Management) equip you with the knowledge and skills to lead and manage people working in health and social care, develop as a leader and manager in contemporary and complex healthcare.

Master of Philosophy (Social Work)

The Master of Social Work (Professional Qualifying) provides graduates with the theoretical and practical skills required to work as a professional social worker, an occupation that the Australian government predicts will continue to experience very strong growth. This course is accredited by the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) and graduates are eligible to become a member of the AASW. Social workers typically work with disadvantaged and marginalised individuals, groups, and communities within a social justice and human rights framework in counselling, advocacy, and the enhancement of health and well-being.

Master of Social Work (Professional Qualifying)

The Master of Philosophy (Social Work) course has a particular emphasis on social work in rural and remote communities, as well as focusing on issues surrounding Indigenous peoples, child protection and the Law. Social work at UNE is designed around an interactive problem-based learning approach to equip students for the challenge of being agents of change in the 21st century.

Research Services

The postgraduate research degrees are managed by UNE's Research Services.  Research Services will provide information on various aspects including application form for domestic students, postgraduate scholarships, research ethics and other forms and policies.
