FJH Letters Scholarship for Classics Honours

CONDITIONS OF AWARD

General Goal

To attract to the University of New England very able candidates to undertake a BA Honours candidature in Greek, Latin, or Joint Classics.

An acceptable awardee

The candidate must have outstanding results in the BA degree in Greek, Latin, or Classics, and intend to pursue Honours at UNE in any area of Ancient Greek or Latin or Joint Classics (Homer to the early Byzantine period) which involves a strong focus on the language(s) and their literature. A thesis on a non-language or literature topic, such as history or philosophy, is permitted, but must still contain plenty of evidence of proficiency in the language(s).

Eligibility

  1. Preference will be given to internal full-time Honours candidates. However, external and part-time candidates may be considered if in that year no suitable internal full-time applicant emerges. External Honours candidates entering their second year of p/t enrolment are eligible to apply on a pro rata basis.
  2. The applicant must be an Australian citizen, normally resident in Australia
  3. The scholarship may be held in conjunction with any other scholarships.

Tenure

  1. Internal full-time: 1 calendar year, subject to evidence of satisfactory progress (as determined       by the thesis Supervisor in conjunction with the Professor of Classics & Ancient History).
  2. External part-time: 2 years on a pro rata basis, subject to   evidence of satisfactory progress         (as determined by the thesis Supervisor in conjunction with the Professor of Classics & Ancient  History).

Value

$1,000 p.a. f/t, or pro rata p/t. The award is payable each year in two equal installments, the first at the start of the candidature upon proof of enrolled status, the second 6 months later upon recommendation from the Head of School and the Supervisor confirming satisfactory progress.

Caveat

The holder of this Scholarship will be asked to repay it if candidature is transferred to another University.

Method of application

Please complete the application form below.  Provide evidence of Australian citizenship; certified copies of degree transcripts; names of two academic referees who should be asked by the candidate to write confidentially to Research Services by the closing date; electronic copies of BA thesis or other evidence of research (published or unpublished).

Note

This scholarship is not available for Honours candidates in Ancient History. The successful applicant of the FJH Letters Scholarship for Classics Honours must acknowledge it specifically in the thesis and in any other published research or conference papers researched or written during the life of this grant.

Under no circumstances will late applications be considered.  Selection of recipients is the responsibility of the Selection Committee whose decision is final.  No correspondence will be entered into.
