Routes into Languages
A School of Education seminar presented on September 13th, 2017 by Dr Catherine Watts (Univ. of Brighton)
Routes into Languages was a national initiative funded by the Department for Education and Science and the Higher Education Funding Council of England to promote the take-up of modern languages in schools and universities in the UK in the face of a national decline in students wishing to study this subject area. The project ran from 2007 to 2016 and nine regional consortia, comprising 67 universities, were established to represent foreign languages throughout England. Routes South was the largest consortium and was led by Dr Catherine Watts at the University of Brighton for the nine years of the project’s lifespan. Catherine will present the Routes into Language initiative in this guest lecture and will consider lessons learned along the way, project outcomes and impact. She will explore the nature of the activities which formed the heart of the work of Routes South, along with the engagement by significant professional bodies on both national and international levels, and reflect on possibilities for the future using this well-established model of operation.
