Global Colonialism

The colonial era represents a substantial and discrete stage of globalization with long lasting and in many cases ongoing positive and negative effects. Convict Australia has been variously depicted as a place of brutality, repression and exploitation, or else a relatively free society where exiles enjoyed higher living standards and better life opportunities than the British and Irish labouring poor. This dichotomy is largely due to inadequate understandings of the landscapes of convict labour extraction.

This hub explores the processes and structures of different modes of colonization and colonialism, considering the diverse experiences of colonizers and colonized populations. Our research embraces collaborative and multidisciplinary approaches, especially towards investigations of the early colonial period in the Asia-Pacific region.
