Staff and students in the School of Arts engage in a wide variety of research projects across the fields of literature and writing, film and media, modern languages and language education, music, theatre, performance, and creative practice. Staff publish, present, and perform their research and creative projects nationally and internationally. In the recent Excellence Research Australia assessment exercise, the school was ranked at World Class in its main areas of research. In recent years the School of Arts has supported a lively program of visiting scholars, writers and illustrators in residence, and promotes theatre and music projects locally and nationally.

The School of Arts hosts regular Research Seminars during Trimesters 1 and 2, and a number of public lectures including the Gordon Athol Anderson Memorial Lecture and the Sir Robert Madgwick Lecture.
