Information about studying THEA302

THEA302 offers students in Theatre and Performance an opportunity to pursue in-depth practical study of an agreed aspect of performance, under the guidance of a member of staff.

Students wishing to enrol in THEA302 need to devise a project taking about 150 hours of work and present a proposal to the unit coordinator for approval before work can begin. This is to ensure that the project is appropriate and achievable in the time. To help with this, we have given examples of proposals.

It is the responsibility of the student find a willing supervisor from among the staff.

In most cases the project will require the student to be involved with the creation, performance, design or direction of one or more pieces of theatre or music, but there may be flexibility for students to do something else which will require the same amount of time and still demonstrate that they will learn something valuable about performance in practice from the project.

In the case of students working away from Armidale or off campus outside the direct supervision of the staff of UNE, because of occupational health and safety requirements, any practical work must be done as part of an established theatre or community group that has public liability cover.

The project will typically (though not necessarily) be divided into four phases:

  • the proposal
  • research and preparation
  • rehearsal and performance
  • reflection

The student should propose a division of time, a deadline, and a proportion of the overall mark for each section. The proposal should be forwarded to the unit coordinator at least two weeks before the start of Trimester 2 for final approval.

The proposal should include evidence that the student has already begun to research the topic seriously and knows what will be involved. Where the project involves reading a number of play scripts, the titles should be listed as part of the proposal. In every case at least one academic book or three scholarly articles on the topic should be listed as part of the preliminary research. The proposal should also list useful and reliable websites.

Please be aware that the supervisor is there  in an advisory capacity and to mark the project work, but that it is up to the individual student to do the research and keep on track. This unit is self-directed and self taught, and it provides students with an opportunity to learn by creating theatre or music themselves.

Assessment

There are three assignments:

  • Assignment 1: Proposal (10%) - 500 words
  • Assignment 2: Research Report (30%) - 1500 words
  • Assignment 3: Performance (60%) - equivalent to 2500 words

Enrolment

You will need to find a supervisor and complete an acceptable proposal which the unit coordinator is required to sign before permission to enrol in the unit is complete.
